CENTRAL NEW YORK – Amid the best weather conditions of the season, area high school boys and girls golf teams crowded courses throughout Central New York last week.
Once back in action last Friday, the undefeated Marcellus boys team was again successful against Weedsport, the Mustangs prevailing 216-255 to improve to 5-0.
Over nine holes at Meadowbrook, Will Glass shot 37 and Ben Reome had a 39, leading the individual race. John Williams took third with a 43 ahead of Pat Louer’s 45 as Justin Heath contributed a 52.
Solvay lost last Wednesday to Weedsport 205-296. Josh Komar’s 40 was the only Bearcats score under 50 as Braden Wood went under par for Weedsport, shoting 34.
In girls golf, Marcellus improved to 8-2 early last week with a 228-245 win over Chittenango on the Woodcrest course that will host this week’s OHSL championships.
Allison Coombs accounted for most of the margin, her 47 a full 13 strokes ahead of four players, including teammates Geneveive Formoza and Claire Curtin. Caitlyn Sammon had a 61 and Isabella Formoza added a 63.
Skaneateles was back in action last Tuesday against undefeated Christian Brothers Academy at Drumlins and, like so many others, was overwhelmed by the Brothers in a 167-250 defeat.
Cate Gunderson, shooting a 53 for the Lakers, was 11 shots clear of Emma Murphy (64), followed by Paige Posecznick (66) and Chloe Corbett (67) behind a top-four CBA sweep led by Hana Kang’s 39 and Anna Fuller’s 40.
West Genesee fell to Baldwinsville 212-226 last Monday at Timber Banks. Still, Sophia Simiele, with a 50, tied the Bees’ Julia Quinn for individual honors as Gianna Corbin had a 54 and Olivia Snyder’s 59 beat Allison Shortslef’s 60.
A day later, in a three-team match with Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse Green at the Greens at Beaumont in Brewerton, WG shot 147, ahead of C-NS Green’s 183 but trailing Liverpool’s 129. Simiele posted a 34, with Mia Barbuto adding a 36. Allison Lamberton shot 37.
During last Wednesday’s 181-237 defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius Green at Green Lakes, Lamberton shot a 53 and Simiele a 57, but the Hornets swept the top five as Erin Graves led with a 43.
But the Wildcats finally earned a head-to-head win last Thursday when it edged F-M’s younger White squad in a 202-203 thriller at Westvale.
Barbuto, with a 47, tied the Hornets’ Sydney Hines for individual honors. The key to the win was Simiele and Lamberton both shooting 50 ahead of the 51s from F-M Green’s Georgia Perry and Claire Zerrillo as Snyder clinched the victory with a 55.
