CENTRAL NEW YORK – Of the area’s girls lacrosse teams, Skaneateles retained the highest standard, even as it went through a unique experience in last Tuesday’s game against Christian Brothers Academy.
Lakers goalie Emily Evans found herself on opposite ends with her sister, Maddie, who plays for CBA, and both would have the same amount of success containing shots, Emily getting six saves and Maddie seven.
Skaneateles still won, though, by a comfortable 14-6 margin, led mostly by the duo of Lilly Marquardt and Paige Willard as Marquardt got five goals and Willard three goals, the pair each adding three assists.
Anasofia Cirincione scored twice, with Julia O’Connor also getting three assists. Camryn Calabro had a goal and two assists as Bella Brogan, Tatum Ryan and Rachel Hackler also found the net.
When Skaneateles met up Friday against rival Marcellus, it broke up a four-game win streak for the Mustangs and again asserted its full power, prevailing by a score of 20-7.
Six different Lakers picked up multiple goals, led by O’Connor and Hackler, who each found the net four times as O’Connor added three assists. Cirincione and Brogan each got three goals and one assist.
Aside from her lone goal, Willard amassed five assists, Marquardt getting two goals and four assists as Stanton also coverted twice and Calabro got a goal and two assists. Only Cece Powell, with four goals, converted more than once for Marcellus, with Claire Card, Adelle Aupperle and Korrine Kemp getting the other goals.
Marcellus picked up its third straight win last Monday when it battled past Watertown IHC 10-8, a game where it had a comfortable 7-2 lead built up by halftime, only to have the Cavaliers rally.
It took Powell pouring in six goals to help the Mustangs pull through, Card adding two goals and an assist. Amanda Barbaro had one goal and one assist as Janie Powell also converted. Hannah Netto (four goals) and Abby Bombard (three goals) accounted for most of IHC’s production.
A far more lopsided game 24 hours later had Marcellus pound Mexico 21-3, with Cece Powell adding six more goals to run her season total to 52, but also getting far more help from her teammates.
Card scored four times and added four assists, Avery Shute adding a three-goal hat trick. Leah Wood got two goals as Barbaro,Kemp, Aupperle, Janie Powell, Samantha Buff and Taylor Miceli also converted.
Back on Monday night, Westhill, showing plenty of confidence after playing Skaneateles tough a week earlier, rolled to a 17-6 victory over Southern Hills as it led 9-4 by halftime and kept pulling further away.
A day later, Westhill battled past Ithaca 10-7 as Kara Rosenberger got three goals and two assists. Adelaide Lowery, Karly Dillobaugh and Rosemary Mahoney each scored twice, Lowery adding two assists. Ava Lasher had the other goal as Sophia Lasher and Audrey Holowinski also had assists.
Idle until Saturday, Westhill then faced Class B contender Auburn and may have put together its finest all-around effort of the season to get a 10-8 victory over the Maroons.
The offense built an 8-4 halftime advantage largely thanks to Rosenberger, who would finish with six goals, and Mahoney, who got three goals and one assist.
Lasher had the other goal as she and Dillabough both got a pair of assists and Westhill’s defense did a solid job of containment all game against a potent Auburn attack and the team improved to 10-2 overall.
