CENTRAL NEW YORK – What was supposed to be a girls lacrosse showdown between Jamesville-DeWitt and Fulton was rendered unimportant by events off the field.
The game set for last Friday night was postponed as Fulton continued to deal with with tragedy. One of its players, 17-year-old Rylee Bartlett, lost her life April 30 in a car accident that also critically injured her boyfriend, Brady Niver, a member of Fulton’s wrestling team.
Aware of all this, J-D focused on its game last Tuesday against Auburn, who proved that it was one of the Class B favorites by winning a wild 15-13 battle that put an end to the Red Rams’ eight-game win streak.
Auburn outscored J-D in the first half and led 9-7 at the break, then kept answering every Rams charge led by four goals from Natalie Long and Adalyn Bouley plus a goal and five assists from Olivia Leader.
J-D lost despite four goals and one assist from Caroline Stone as Campbell Endres had three goals and two assists. Macy Durkin and Merris Kessler each got two goals and one assist, with single goals going to Brooke Bort and Sadie Withers.
Fayetteville-Manlius took another close defeat last Tuesday, falling 9-8 in overtime to Liverpool when Mia Berthoff netted the game-winner for LHS, her third goal of the night to match teammate Grace Geary.
Prior to that, Hannah Williamson, with her nine saves, had kept the game close despite the Hornets having to play in its own end most of the night.
Taylor Novack, with three goals and one assist, paced F-M’s attack. Grace Reyna added two goals and an assist, with Emily Noel getting a goal and two assists. Anne Leonard and Kathryn McNany also had goals.
By that same 9-8 score on Thursday night, F-M fell to West Genesee, unable to avenge a 10-9 defeat to the Wildcats in April.
Porter had a game-high four goals and Novack scored twice, with Noel and Leonard adding goals. Yet WG had twice as many goal-scorers, with only Caraline Major converting twice as Olivia Blanding added a goal and three assists.
Christian Brothers Academy had a unique experience last Tuesday at Alibrandi Stadium as its goalie, Maddie Evans, met the Skaneateles side where her own sister, Emily Evans, plays in the net, too.
The Brothers lost, 14-6, to the Lakers, as Maddie had seven saves and Emily six. Mia Kirch, Lilah Kirch and Maeve Mackenzie had two goals apiece as Skaneateles was led by Lilly Marquardt’s five goals and three assists.
On Saturday at Cazenovia, CBA rallied from an 8-7 halftime deficit as its attack proved too potent for the Lakers, the Brothers eventually gaining an 18-12 victory.
Mackenzie, with six goals and one assist, was supported by Lilah Kirch scoring four times and getting two assists. Amelia Bonacci, Maddie Cecilia and Mia Kirch had two goals apiece, with Sydney Vaughn and Allie Quinn also finding the net.
East Syracuse Minoa had suffered eight consecutive defeats until, in last Thursday’s game against Syracuse City, it broke through, the Spartans prevailing by a score of 13-6.
Aside from solid defense throughout the game, ESM also got five goals and one assist from Madison Wood as Sophia Ferns had a three-goal hat trick. Mary Grace Godleski scored twice, while single goals went to Anna Paduano, Adrianna Byrd and Jaelynn Aldrich and Sarah Stadelmann added an assist.
Before this, ESM went north last Tuesday and put up plenty of goals against Oswego, but still lost 19-10 to the Buccaneers, who got seven goals apiece from Aliana DiBlais and Mia Fierro/
