CENTRAL NEW YORK – Though they weren’t done against future post-season opponents, what the Christian Brothers Academy and Fayetteville-Manlius boys lacrosse teams did last Tuesday was remind everyone of what they could yet accomplish.
In CBA’s case, it meant knocking off 9-1 Skaneateles in a 10-8 decision before the Lakers had a showdown with undefeated Marcellus later in the week.
Above everything else, the Brothers’ defense stood out in the way it contained Skaneateles’ biggest scoring threat, Grayson Brunelle, holding him to two goals and one assist as Matt Craybas finished with 10 saves.
On the other end, it was Andrew Kohlbrenner scoring four times and the rest of the production spread out. Joe Papa, Jack Wichmann and Jack Ludington each had one goal and one assist, with single tallies also earned by John Massaro, James Stanton and Ben Anderson.
CBA could not translate this into a win Saturday against West Genesee, falling 19-12 as it played the Wildcats to a 9-9 halftime tie but then gave up five unanswered goals in the third quarter.
Battling to the end, the Brothers saw Ludington, Papa and Kohlbrenner account for all the goals and Craybas get 11 saves, but WG had six diferent multiple goal-scorers, led by Liam Burns and Nolan Belotti with four goals apiece.
As for F-M, its 12-4 romp over Cicero-North Syracuse at Bragman Stadium sharply contrasted the 13-12 loss it took at home to the Northstars in April.
But the Hornets shut down a C-NS lineup without top scorer Mason Ciciarelli. Aside from Elijah Martin’s hat trick, C-NS only managed a single goal, from Ian Leahey.
F-M, who had seen its own star forward (T.J. Conley) get lost for the season in April, had adjusted. John Angelicola, with three goals, led a well-balanced attack as Sean Kellish, Robert Madden and Kyle Freyer each scored twice and added an assist. Michael Hance and David Concannon both had one goal and one assist as Colin Clark converted, too.
Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa meet each other late this week, but last week had little trouble against league opposition.
The Red Rams shut out Central Square 18-0 last Tuesday night, Gannon Kessler scoring five times as Lucas Patchen and Andrew Laubenstein each had three-goal hat tricks. Mario Streiff and Eli Goldberg had two goals apiece.
Then J-D routed Auburn 14-2 on Friday, not allowing a goal after the first quarter and seeing Aidan Bates go to the forefront, scoring four times overall.
Graham Kesserling netted three goals, with Patchen and Sam Brazell each getting two goals and two assists. Streiff had a goal and three assists as Kessler and Nick Miller also found the net.
ESM, meanwhile, took care of Cortland 16-4 to climb above the .500 mark (6-5) as Dan Abreu and Cayden Claflin each scored four times, Claflin adding two assists.
Noah Taylor and Logan Welch each had two goals and one assist, with single goals earned by Mike Santillo, who got two assists, plus Gavin Rinaldi, Joe Leveroni and Nick Courcy.
Then ESM met Syracuse City on Thursday and prevailed 13-6, the exact same score by which the girls won over Syracsue for its first win of the season that same night.
This game belonged to Welch, whose seven goals topped the entire opposing team. Evan deBerjeois had a goal and two assists as Claflin got two goals and one assist. Santillo, Taylor and Abreu also converted.
Moving to Saturday’s action, ESM got another win, 11-8, over C-NS, outscoring the Northsars 6-3 in the second and third quarters as Claflin and deBerjeois each had three-goal hat tricks, with Taylor scoring twice. Single goals went to Santillo, Welch and Abreu, Luke James recording nine saves.
