CENTRAL NEW YORK – Not until late last week did it warm up enough for the area’s high school boys tennis teams to resume a full schedule, but two of them were able to get some league wins.
Skaneateles had no trouble in last Friday’s match against Phoenix, blanking the Firebirds 5-0 as Jake Salzhauer shut out Robert Reynolds 6-0, 6-0.
Kevin Torrisi and James Lovier each won 6-2, 6-2 matches over, respectively, Liam Campanino and Cayden Mackay, while in the lone contested doubles match Max Karpinski and Peter Salzhauer won 6-0, 6-0 over Dylan Jones and Jackson Giacobbi.
Marcellus was victorious that same Friday, topping Pulaski 4-1, for its first victory of the season.
West Genesee had to go up last Wednesday against Fayetteville-Manlius, and rarely were able to get games from the Hornets in a 7-0 defeat.
Nate Ruston lost a pair of singles matches in two sets, with Dan Alvaro falling 6-0, 6-1 to Colin Byer.
Of the four doubles matches, the closest came from the teams of John McCann and Jonah Hanlon, who fell in a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Agniva Chaudhuri and John Gilligan.
A day later, facing Liverpool, the Wildcats would earn a point thanks to Jacob Dalton and John Diem, who in straight sets roared past John Ioannidis and Aydan Presley 6-2, 6-2.
But Liverpool won every other point, taking it 6-1 as Ruston and Dan Alvaro lost in singles and Ty’san Scott, in three sets, fell to Mason Pinchin 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Josh Pierce and Joe Paoli took a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Andrew Wadie and Aiden Hunter as McCann and Hanlon had a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Greyson Valente and Raury Bienkowski.
Yet another tough match on Friday had WG falling 7-0 to Baldwinsville, with Ruston, Scott and Josh Pierce all taking singles defeats. Paoli and Nathan Smith lasted a bit longer in doubles but still lost to Nick Helbig and Andrew Jung in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
