ONONDAGA COUNTY – Two traditional high school boys tennis powers in the area maintained winning marks, one of them at the expense of another.
Jamesville-DeWitt battled Christian Brothers Academy last Thursday afternoon and, led by singles players, pulled away for a 6-1 victory over the Brothers.
Even with CBA’s 6-0 record going into the match, (including last Wednesday’s shutout of LaFayette), J-D set a tone when, in first singles, Mark Bratslavsky worked past Chanu Yang 6-0, 6-0.
Also in two sets, Carson Souser beat Hunter Szatkowski 6-2, 6-1, while Will Sharlow was pushed to three sets by Gabriel Yang before taking a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win.
Two of the doubles matches went to three sets. Dean Bratslavsky an Anthony Fico, one game from defeat, rallied past Finn Doyle and Caleb Buddie 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, while Isiah Sternberg and Nate Amare overcame an early deficiti in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over John Engle and Anthony Lisi.
Fayetteville-Manlius had only played one match prior to last Wednesday’s clash with West Genesee, but didn’t let the long break bother them much as the Hornets blanked the Wildcats 7-0.
In singles, Cameron Lukasik and Xavier Sul each won by identical 6-1, 6-0 margins over Nate Ruston, with Colin Byer just as dominant beating Dan Alvaro 6-0, 6-1.
It was the same in doubles as none of the four teams of Gene Balian-Dan Manta, Kaleen Michez-Justin Dunn, Agniva Chaudhuri-John Guigan and Sawyer Brown-Jared Duggal did not lose more than two games in any set they played.
Meanwhile, J-D went head-to-head with East Syracuse Minoa on that same Wednesday, and the Red Rams shut out the Spartans 7-0 to improve to 4-0 on the season.
J-D’s singles trio of Fico, Mark Bratslavsky and Dean Bratslavsky did not surrender a game in any of their singles matches, and the same was true for the doubles teams of Shreyank Bhatt-Luke Cantone and Carson Souser-Will Sharlow.
Though it took a bit longer, Sternberg and Victor Varrasse beat Brett Hockey and Dan Krusse 6-0, 6-2, with Amare and Jacob Price handling Owen Tompkins and Jude Rudnick 6-1, 6-1.
Before this, ESM got its first win of the season last Monday, against Oswego, the Spartans claiming all three contested doubles matches on the way to beating the Buccaneers 6-1.
Jayce Domres and Jacob Harmon won 6-2, 6-0 over Logan Brayton and Sean Metcalf, while Donovan Randall and Jacob Sehn handled Shiemal Boyde and Leonard Lin 6-1, 6-1.
Krusse and Ari Oviedo routed Cooper Therien and Clayton Andrews 6-0, 6-1 as, in singles, Josh Spilka took a defeat, but Noah Satterlee beat Donovan Costanza 6-2, 6-4 and Jacob McGuigan worked past Brandon Sorbino 6-1, 6-1.
Manlius Pebble Hill returned to action on Friday and lost 4-1 to Cazenovia, the Trojans getting its lone point when Andy and Sam Lurvey paired up in doubles to beat Ethan Camp and Cy Laurie 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). Gonzalo De La Torre lost his singles match in three sets to Gabe Reagan 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.
