CENTRAL NEW YORK – While the Skaneateles girls lacrosse teams sets a high standard for area high schools, even it found itself showing some early-season vulnerabilty.
Section V’s Canandaigua met the Lakers last Tuesday night and, playing a strong game start to finish, withstood a late comeback attempt to upend Skaneateles in a 10-9 decision.
All that the Lakers could manage in the first half was a pair of goals, watching as Canandaigua dictated the pace and used long possessions to take Skaneateles out of what it wanted to do.
Trailing 5-2 at the break, the Lakers did make a late move led by Lilly Marquardt (three goals) and Julia O’Connor (two goals, two assists) as Bella Brogan also scored twice. Camryn Calabro and Paige Willard had the other goals and Tatum Ryan got two assists.
Still, Canandaigua held on, overcoming Emily Evans’ eight saves and leaving Skaneateles to ponder the end of a five-game win streak.
Jordan-Elbridge now welcomed the Lakers on Thursday night, and was on the receiving end of a clinical Lakers effort as the visitors rolled to a 17-3 victory.
Seven different Skaneateles players picked up multiple goals, none more than the three earned by Brogan. Calabro had two goals and two assists, her goal total equaled by Ryan, Rachel Hackler, Anasofia Cirincione and Janie Phillips.
Marquardt, with four assists, and O’Connor, with two assists, mostly served as passers as they joined Mara Stanton and Kiki Morrissey with single goals. Kelsey Brunelle had two of J-E’s three goals, the other going to Riley Crawford.
J-E had, earlier in the week, battled past Seneca Falls’ Mynderse Academy 13-11 to get above the .500 mark, the effort led by Crawford, who netted five goals and added an assist.
Behind Crawford, four other Eagles – Brunelle, Makayla Penird, Marcelline Titus and Lili Humphreys – earned two goals apiece, Brunelle also getting three assists. Stella Opanhoske added a goal.
After the defeat to Skaneateles, J-E played again Saturday and lost, 16-9, to General Brown, though Crawford had four goals and Penird and Briella Gilfus each scored twice. Natalie Bonham-Kovalik led the Lions with six goals.
Westhill, who plays Skaneateles this week, blanked Chittenango 16-0 last Tuesday night, led by Adelaide Lowery’s five goals and two assists.
Avery Starowicz and Kara Rosenberger both had three-goal hat tricks as Sophia Lasher converted twice. Karly Dillabough and Sienna Jetter each had a goal and three assists.
Marcellus took its own setback against the combined Southern Hills team last Tuesday afternoon, a 12-10 loss made more frustrating by the fact that the Mustangs played a good first half and led 7-4 at the break.
But the Storm stormed back, led by Ava Spicer’s four goals and Kiera Reed’s eight saves, two more than Janie Powell. Claire Card led the Mustangs with four goals, while Cece Powell scored three times and got an assist. Avery Shute had two goals and Leah Wood a single goal.
