CENTRAL NEW YORK – For much of recent history, the West Genesee track and field teams looked up in the SCAC Metro division standings as the likes of Fayetteville-Manlius.
That changed in last Wednesday’s league opener, when the boys Wildcats handled the Hornets 79-62 and the girls almost won, too, before taking a 72-69 defeat.
Kev Scott went 11.0 seconds in the 100-meter dash as Chris Moser had a top 400-meter dash time of 52.2 seconds. Scott, Francisco Cross, Will Fettig and Dylan Frost tore to a time of 44.5 in the 4×100 relay.
Moser, Frost, Logan Scott and Zach Hahn won the 4×400 in 3:41.2, Dom Burris taking the triple jump by going 39 feet 1 inch and Kevin Moser taking the 800 in 2:07.2.
Meanwhile, in the girls event WG saw Da’Mya Rufus emerge to take the 100 sprint in 12.9 seconds and the 200 in 28.0 seconds. Amelia Haynes went 19.7 seconds to win the 100 hurdles as Rebecca Vella cleared 4 feet in the high jump and Harper Flynn had a top triple jump of 27’8 1/2”.
Rivals went head-to-head last Wednesday and Westhill toppled Marcellus 104-37 in the girls meet, but had to pull out a 71-69 decision in the boys meet to complete the sweep.
Carter Buckman won twice for Westhill, going 17.0 seconds in the 110 hurdles and clearing 10 feet in the pole vault. Andrew O’Reilly went 2:14.1 in the 800 and helped the Warriors win the 4×800 in 9:23 flat. Derrick Trotman unleashed a top discus throw of 113’8”.
Bohdan Centore, aside from his 1,600-meter win in 5:02.0, helped a 4×400 (3:52.0) team that also included Owen Mulholland, victorious in the 400 hurdles in a quick 59.4 seconds. Edward Popp won the 3,200-meter run and Anthony Osorio went 39’9” in the triple jump.
Winning twice for Marcellus, Joe Striffler went 18’1” in the long jump and 54.7 seconds in the 400 sprint, helped by Andrew McCaffrey winning the 200 in 23.8 and James Hoey throwing the shot put 39’1′. Ay-Zoh Shaw cleared 5’1” in the high jump.
To lead the girls Warriors, Mary Kate Rewakowski cleared 12 feet in the pole vault, Emma Marshall adding a top discus throw of 83’7”.
Emma Murphy was first in the 100 hurdles in 16 seconds flat and matched Ava Baty’s 32’11” in the triple jump as Ashley Bolesh was first in the 400 sprint in 1:00.4. Isabel Young took the 400 sprint and Jules Bleskoski was first in the 800 in 2:31.9, with Isabel Leonardo winning the 200 in 27.8 seconds.
Marcellus got Sophia Maum to sweep the 1,500 (5:44.7) and 3,000 (12:41.4), with Allison Langham going 16’5” in the long jump. Lorelei Reffler cleared 4’6” in the high jump, equaled by Abby Bianchi, while Bailey Ellis threw the shot put 30’8” to win that event over Westhill’s Jael Hill (29’9”).
In its league opener, Skaneateles beat Institute of Technology Central, winning 82-45 on the girls side as Kyla Palmer ran the 400 in 57.6 seconds to go with wins in the 100 (13.1) and 200 (25.8) plus helping the Lakers’ 4×400 relay team prevail in 4:29.9.
Also for Skaneateles, Alice Spaulding threw the discus 95’5”, with wins earned by Maddie Wright (high jump), Gianna Caraccio (triple jump), Lucy Fleckenstein (3,000) and Tobi DiRubbo (1,500).
Solvay had its girls team take an 84-35 defeat to Phoenix, though Emily Rolince did sweep the throwing events for the Bearcats, tossing the shot put 27’1 1/2” and the discus 67′ 1/4” as Kyira Davis claimed the 200 in 29.9 seconds. Jordan-Elbridge had a 56-47 defeat to Weedsport.
