CENTRAL NEW YORK – Two games into its season, the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team had already prove quite impressive, but it was only warming up for better performances.
The Lakers hosted Fayetteville-Manlius last Monday at Hyatt Stadium and torched the Hornets’ defense for 13 first-half goals, easily handling the Hornets 19-5.
What made this so good was that Skaneateles got a full complement of star turns from a group that included Paige Willard, who led in points with four goals and one assist.
Anasofia Cirincione’s four goals were a new career mark, with Camryn Calabro adding three goals and two assists as Julia O’Connor notched five assists to go with her lone tally.
Three others – Rachel Hackler, Bella Brogan and Mara Stanton – had two goals apiece, with Lilly Marquardt getting one goal and one assist. Tatum Ryan added an assist.
Off until Friday, Skaneateles handled Mexico 16-1 that night with 14 unanswered goals in the first half and an attack with 11 different goal-scorers.
Marquardt, with two goals and three assists, led the way, but Ryan, Hackler and Allie Michel also found the net twice. Stanton had a goal and three assists and Calabro managed one goal and one assist. Janie Phillilps, Maura Leonardis, Allison Whipple and Kiki Morrissey all took turns finding the net.
Less than 24 hours later, Skaneateles met its namesakes from Cazenovia and stormed out to a 14-1 advantage by halftime on the way to winning this latest Laker duel 18-6.
Again, there was great scoring balance, Willard and Stanton both finishing with three goals and three assists as Marquardt got two goals and four assists. Brogan and Ryan also scored twice, with Cirincione getting a goal and three assists.
Two other local teams met head-to-head last Tuesday night, with Marcellus gradually getting away from Jordan-Elbridge and, by beating the Eagles 13-7, earning its first win of the season.
By herself, Cece Powell equaled J-E’s entire output, pouring in seven goals. Claire Card scored twice, with single goals going to Amanda Barbaro, Janie Powell, Avery Shute and Leah Wood. Samantha Bufa and Korrine Kemp added assists.
On the Eagles’ side, Makayla Penird stood out with three goals and one assist. Riley Crawford got two goals, while Kelsey Brunelle and Lily Humphries also found the net. Ryleigh Gill made 13 saves, two more than the Marcellus duo of Janie Powell and Mia Caryl.
As a follow-up, Marcellus beat Chittenango 14-7 Thursday night, mostly thanks to Card’s seven goals and Powell’s five goals which gave her 12 for the week. Shute and Amanda Barbaro had the other goals.
Then Marcellus lost 20-8 to Section II’s Bethlehem on Saturday, unable to stop the Eagles from amassing a 15-4 lead by halftime, though Powell did have five goals and one assist. Card, Shute and Leah Wood had the other goals.
Westhill, a week removed from a big win over West Genesee, had a far easier time of it topping Homer 19-2 last Thursday night, with Sophia Lasher scoring five times and Kara Rosenberger getting four goals and four assists.
Rosemary Mahoney notched five assists, with Karly Dillobaugh and Avery Starowicz each converting twice. Adelaide Lowery and Aubrey Holowinski each had one goal and one assist, with Sienna Jetter and Olivia Gonnella adding goals.
