CENTRAL NEW YORK – Greeted by unusual early-April warmth, area high school boys tennis teams were able to get in opening-week matches of varying degrees of difficulty.
Skaneateles faced Homer last Tuesday afternoon and, helped by strong play in singles and doubles, earned a 6-1 victory over the Trojans.
A day later, though, the Lakers ran into Christian Brothers Academy, who claimed every single match in the course of prevailing 5-0, leaving Skaneateles at 1-1 overall.
Still, the week ended on a good note for Skaneateles when it recorded its own 5-0 shutout, this one over Mexico.
Max Karpinski and Jake Salzhauer led the singles sweep, each of them getting 6-0, 6-0 wins over, respectively, Joe Boulais and Avery Oakes as Kevin Torrisi beat Billy Mills 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, James Lovier and Peter Salzhauer topped Kevin Perlet and Sam Britton 6-1, 6-1, while by those same scores Evan Wingfield and Jackson Kennedy handled Jacob Gates and Preston Searor.
West Genesee faced the most difficult assignment possible, against traditional powerhouse Fayetteville-Manlius, who kept the Wildcats off the board in a 7-0 defeat.
A 7-0 loss to Baldwinsville followed on Thursday afternoon, the Wildcats seeing Joe Paoli, Nate Ruston and Jacob Dalton each take singles defeats.
Meanwhile, in doubles Willard Young and Ty’san Scott had the closest match, a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to Connor Tutor and Zach Treichler, with the teams of Josh Pierce-Nathan Smith, Jack Neves-Dan Alvaro and John Diem-John McCann also absorbing defeats.
As for Westhill, it took on Chittenango last Wednesday afternoon and managed a single point in the course of a 4-1 defeat to the Bears.
Shay Smyth earned that point in first singles, shutting out Logan Bronner 6–0, but Chittenango won the other three contested matches in straight sets and also claimed a forfeit.
Marcellus faced Cazenovia on Friday afternoon and took a 4-2 defeat, able to get a point out of doubles when Mike Deveroux and Jose Carlos turned back Max Reger and Robbie Dorus 6-3, 6-0.
