SYRACUSE – Withstanding a major challenge, the Westhill girls indoor track and field team emerged as champions during Wednesday’s Onondaga High School League Division 1 championships at SRC Arena.
The Warriors needed 131 points to fend off the 120.5 from runner-up Cazenovia as Skaneateles got third place with 69 points, Marcellus was seventh and Solvay was ninth.
Marcellus did better in the boys OHSL 1 meet, earning 89 points which only trailed the 98 from Cazenovia as Westhill was fourth and Skaneateles sixth.
In the girls meet, Westhill was led by Ashley Bolesh, who went three minutes, 20.02 seconds to take the 1,000-meter run over CBA’s Ally Roueche (3:20.91) and then won the 1,500-meter run in 5:12.49.
Kate Bendall joined in when, in exactly nine seconds, she went 1-2 with Emma Murphy (9.34) in the 55-meter hurdles and then won the triple jump with 34 feet 3 inches, just ahead of Murphy’s second-place 33’9”, to go with a second in the long jump at 15’7 1/2”.
Eileen Mullen won the 3,000-meter run in 11:50.10 as Stella Napolitano was third in 11:55.79. The Warriors were second in the 4×200 relay in 1:54.64, also third in the 4×400 and third in the 4×800.
Mallie Alt and Mary Kate Rewakowski each cleared 8 feet in the pole vault for the second and third spots. Allison Langham got third in the 55-meter dash in 7.79 seconds.
Kyla Palmer again led Skaneateles, going 1:41.07 to cruise to a victory in the 600-meter run as Westhill’s Kennedy Rose (1:44.90) was third, with Palmer also dominating the 300-meter dash, winning in 40.87 seconds.
Going 1-2 in the weight throw, the Lakers had Mara Stanton win with a toss of 39’9 1/2” as Alice Spaulding was second with 37’3”. Maddie Wright was victorious in the high jump, clearing 5 feet.
Cate Comer got fourth place in the 1,000 and helped the Lakers take fourth in the 4×800 to go with a fifth in the 4×200. Ellie Springer took fifth in the pole vault.
Marcellus added a fourth in the 4×400 as Sophia Maum took fourth place in the 1,500, with Olivia Smolen fourth and Tessy Huntley fifth in the weight throw. Lorelei Riffler tied Westhill’s Ileanna Hopkins for third in the high jump and Anella Bolster took fifth in the long jump.
Solvay had Emily Rolince claim the shot put with a throw of 29’7 1/2” as Spaulding was third. The Bearcats’ Rachel Willsey finished fifth in the 55 hurdles.
Moving to the boys meet, Marcellus saw Andrew McCaffrey, Joe Striffler, Paul Swenson and Xander Szalach win the 4×400 in 3:40.32. Striffler also took second in the triple jump with 39’1” and was fourth in the 300.
Ethan Snyder added a title in the 55 sprint in 6.84 seconds to the 6.88 from Syracuse ITC’s Anderson Rodriguez, with Andrew McAffrey clearing 10’6” to win the pole vault just ahead of the 10-foot leap from Westhill’s Carter Buckman.
Snyder, Szalach, Swenson and McCaffery were second in the 4×200 in 1:38.09 to ITC’s 1:36.36. Nate Alexander was third in the 3,200-meter run, with Nolan Manahan third in the 1,000 and Owen Alexander fourth in the 55 hurdles.
For Skaneateles, Will Feeney had a 43’8 3/4” in the shot put to beat the 40’8 3/4” from Marcellus’ Cameron Sadler, and his 50’3” in the shot put was topped only by the 52’6 3/4” from Homer’s Logan Darling.
In the high jump, Max Paciorek stood out for the Lakers, clearing 6’2” as Szalach (5’6”) was third for Marcellus. Paciorek also finished fifth in the long jump.
Westhill had Drew O’Reilly win at 1,600 meters in 4:37 flat as Bohdan Centore (4:51.58) finished fourth. Later, in the 4×800, O’Reilly, Centore, Edward Popp and Bryce Burdick prevailed in 9:05.81 as Marcellus (9:36.11) was third and Skaneateles fourth in 9:57.19.
The Warriors took third in the 4×400 in 3:46.27 as Edward Popp was fourth in the 1,000, Anthony Osorio fourth in the triple jump and Julian Curtis fourth in the 600. Solvay’s Jaysin Bliss had a second-place long jump of 18’10 3/4”.
