CENTRAL NEW YORK – Heading into the decisive month of February, the Christian Brothers Academy/Jamesville-DeWitt ice hockey team still finds itself perched in second place in Division II behind only Skaneateles.
If the Brothers held on to this, it could have as many as two home games in the upcoming Section III playoffs, but it would go there off a more difficult stretch of the season.
This incldued last Friday’s game against Cazenovia at the SUNY-Morrisville IcePlex, where two scoring surges helped the Lakers defeat the Brothers 6-4.
Early in the first period, Cazenovia’s Forrest Ives twice converted on breakaways, including one short-handed. Then Jack Donlin hit back-to-back goals early in the second, putting him past 100 career points.
Ives returned to complete his hat trick in the last minute of the period and Logan Hull tacked on a goal in the third while goalie Ezra Stahlberg, facing huge shot volume late in the game, made 31 saves.
Four different CBA/J-D players – Gavin Parks, Quinn Wimer, Will Sharlow and Logan Novak – earned the team’s four goals, with Finn Wheeler and Ryan Hayden joining Parks and Wimer in the assist column.
Fayetteville-Manlius found itself unable to get on the board in last Tuesday’s game against Cicero-North Syracuse at State Fair Coliseum, falling 4-0 to the Northstars in its only action of the week.
C-NS took charge in the second period, scoring three times after a scoreless first. Hayden Scott converted twice, with Drew Matyasik and Tyler Milewski getting the other goals.
F-M had plenty of its own opportunities throughout the night, but kept getting turned back by a stingy C-NS defense as goaltender Leyton Sullivan stopped all 30 shots he faced.
Hornets goalie Chris Finger had 25 saves as F-M, when it returned, would meet Ithaca and Liverpool this week before a Feb. 7 regular-season finale against Mohawk Valley.
