LYSANDER – With each week, and with each victory accumulated, the Baldwinsville ice hockey team continues to add to the feeling that this season could be quite special.
Though only no. 11 in the latest state Division I rankings, the Bees have played far beyond that level, continuing to do so last Friday as it blanked Cazenovia 2-0 at Three Rivers Athletic Complex.
It was the first time these teams had faced each other since last winter’s Section III semifinal, won by B’ville on that same ice, and this one would prove quite tough.
From the outset, B’ville attacked the Lakers hard, taking 13 shots in the first period. Tucker Ives stopped 12 of them, only giving up Keegan Lynch’s goal midway through the frame.
On the other end, Cazenovia pressured, too, taking nine shots, but Jon Schirmer stopped all of them for the Bees and would remain stingy through a second period where neither side would convert.
Through much of the third period, the Lakers kept it 1-0, Ives working his total to 25 saves, yet his teammates were unable to nab the tying goal as B’ville doubled its margin in the late stages.
It was Nick Carry earning the insurance goal, Fernando Moreno and Jamie Gipe having picked up assists and Schirmer finishing the night with 14 saves.
The game proved that the Bees did not have a letdown after it beat Skaneateles by that same 2-0 margin in the Jan. 7 finals of the Duke Schneider Tournament at Allyn Arena.
Up ahead, B’ville meets Cicero-North Syracuse Wednesday at the Twin Rinks before returning home Saturday to face Section V’s Fairport.
