CENTRAL NEW YORK – For two days on Dec. 15 and 16, area high school boys basketball teams had several games postponed by winter weather.
Then play resumed, though most of the sides would not see game action until the following week, when the likes of West Genesee looked to continue their strong starts.
In advance of a showdown with fellow unbeaten Cicero-North Syracuse, WG went to Baldwinsville Tuesday and, on a night where B’ville honored both of its state Class A lacrosse champions, The Wildcats spoiled the occasion with a lopsided 76-45 win.
WG was in control from the outset, steadily building a 38-17 lead by halftime and then outscoring the Bees 28-12 in the third quarter.
Four Wildcats starters – Gary McLane (15 points), Jordan Cain, Christian Cain (13 points each) and Christian Amica (11 points) – reached double figures before sitting the fourth quarter.
It was the other way for Bishop Ludden, though, as the Gaelic Knights were shut down by archrival Christian Brothers Academy 64-24 in the Dec. 17 renewal of the “Holy War” during the Zebra Classic at Liverpool High School.
When these same teams met in this same event at this same venue 12 months ago, Ludden was down 41-11 by halftime in a 74-40 defeat.
Here, it was in the third quarter that CBA got away, outscoring Ludden24-8 after a low-scoring first half and despite the Gaelic Knights containing the Brothers’ top scorer, Braeden Burns, and holding him to six ponts.
Tim Dunham and Mike Masterpole were the only Ludden players to net more than one field goal, while CBA got 14 points from Will Harrigan, 11 points from Luke Boule and 10 points from Tavin Penix.
A 78-49 defeat to Chittenango followed Tuesday night, Ludden seeing Aidan Mahar get 17 points, including five 3-pointers, while Dunham had 12 points. Alex Moesch (21 points) and Ryan Moesch (20 points) led the Bears.
Solvay moved to 3-2 on the season last Monday by romping past Cato-Meridian 74-43, with most of the damage done in a second half where the Bearcats outscored the Blue Devils 42-21.
Each of the 11 Solvay players that saw action got at least one field goal. Jeff Sharpe, with 13 points, led a well-balanced attack as Luis Mojica got 12 points, with Jordan Dippold, Jaylen King and Ikeem Vaughn earning eight points apiece.
And Solvay won again on Wednesday, handling Homer 60-46 led by Sharpe, who got most of his 20 points from five 3-pointers. Mojica had nine points, while Aaron Trendel and Aiyden Geigel stepped up with eight points apiece.
Skaneateles also won last Monday against Seneca Falls’ Mynderse Academy, its 54-47 margin entirely built on outscoring the Blue Devils 18-11 in the second quarter of an otherwise tight contest.
Nate Shattuck led with 15 points, but had plenty of help. Ethan Hunt and Caleb Bradley had 12 points apiece, with Tyson DiRubbo adding nine points and Carter Loi earning eight points.
Marcellus fell to Bishop Grimes last Tuesday night, the 69-56 defeat one where the Cobras built its winning margin over the first three periods in a steady, consistent manner.
Will Burnett still led the Mustangs with 16 points, helped by Will Kershaw (12 points) and Pat Louer (nine points), but none of them matched the Grimes duo of Erik Wall and Deng Garang as Wall got 26 points and Garang added 23 points.
