CENTRAL NEW YORK – Bad weather had interrupted some area high school girls basketball teams, and they would struggle when they returned to the court.
Skaneateles was off to a 4-1 start and were no. 17 in the state Class B rankings when it hosted Cortland Monday night and played on even terms most of the way, yet paid for a slow start in a 50-36 loss to the Purple Tigers.
Held in check throughout the first quarter, the Lakers trailed 13-3, and any chance to rally dissipated in the third quarter when Cortland outscored them 16-4.
Maddy Ramsgard did finish with 13 points, while Ayla Pas’cal got 10 points and Allie Michel eight points. All of them trailed the 24 points put up by the Purple Tigers’ Mallory Turner that included six 3-pointers.
Showing a nice ability to bounce back from a defeat, the Lakers romped past Bishop Grimes 56-31 two nights later, setting the tone with an 18-3 domination of the first quarter.
Most of the offense was generated by Ramsgard, Michel and Pas’cal as Ramsgard earned 17 points, Michel got 14 points and Pas’cal finishe with 13 points. For the Cobras, only Kierra Baxter, with 13 points, reached double figures.
Marcellus found itself at Christian Brothers Academy Monday night and overwhelmed by the Brothers’ Chainna Williams in a 53-38 defeat.
Whatever the Mustangs tried on defense did not work against Williams, who piled up 31 points, more than half of it from sinking six 3-pointers.
Unable to overcome a 34-19 halftime deficit, Marcellus saw its top scorer, Cece Powell, held to 10 points. Gabby Voss led her side with 12 points as Corrine Aldrich added nine points.
Before Marcellus met the Brothers, West Genesee fell 47-28 to CBA last Saturday as it could not recover from the Brothers’ 17-6 first-quarter surge.
Still, Isabella Quinones continued her improvement, leading the Wildcats with 17 points. Combined, the rest of WG’s roster had just five field goals as Chianna Williams, with 26 points, carried the CBA attack.
Unfazed by this, the Wildcats hosted Baldwinsville in Tuesday’s SCAC Metro division opener and, led by Quinones, took over late to defeat the Bees 45-38.
WG spent the first three quarters trading the lead with B’ville, with the game tied, 33-33, going to the final period.
Here, though, the Bees went cold, getting just five points the rest of the way as the Wildcats clamped down on defense and went in front for good led by Quinones, who finished with 18 points.
Emilie Shoults and Maddie Snow helped out, with eight points apiece. Only Madison Polky, with 11 points, hit double figures for B’ville.
