CENTRAL NEW YORK – Each of the area’s high school wrestling teams were on the mat the Wednesday before Christmas, but only one of them emerged victorious.
That was Jordan-Elbridge, who brought its full roster to its match against Cazenovia and won eight consecutive bouts on its way to routing the Lakers 53-12.
Beginning the streak at 110 pounds, Liam Mantell pinned Cullen Arnold in 91 seconds, followed by a forfeit to Lucas Witter (118 pounds) and Kaylee Swalgin’s 74-second fall over Jacob Gentner at 126 pounds.
Dylan Nolan (132 pounds) and Bryce Mahoney (140 pounds) matched each other with 44-second pins – Nolan over Finnegan Smith, Mahoney over Declan Young.
Shutouts followed by Henry Smith (145 pounds) over Bryce Enders 7-0 and Jack Lamson (152 pounds) over Broden Enders 10-0 before Glen Sanchez, at 160 pounds, pinned Finn Tobin near the end of the first period.
Two more wins followed as Angelo Turo, at 189 pounds, pinned Brad Gagnon in 99 seconds and Raiden Yale, at 215 pounds, pulled away from Exazander Simzer 12-4.
A close meet between Marcellus and Phoenix would go 30-28 in the Firebirds’ favor, in large part because the Mustangs had to forfeit at 110 pounds to the Firebirds’ Quentin Thomas.
Otherwise, the lone early Marcellus win came at 215 where Jayden Abbott pinned Logan Nelson in 78 seconds. Also, the Mustangs were unable to get pins against tough Phoenix foes in the lighter weight classes.
Still, Jack Burton, at 118, topped Scott Hunneymann 6-2, with Devon Beal (126) getting away from Chase Huntley 11-2 and Colin Scherer (132) earning a 9-2 win over Caleb Jolly.
Phoenix clinched it with three wins in a row, including a close bout at 138 where Trevor Rankin lost 5-2 to Robert Reynolds, but Dan Okhman (160) and Chris Doshna (172) closed with pins, Okhman toping Tom Antonacci in 67 seconds and Doshna taking just 14 seconds to pin Cody Hagar.
West Genesee took on Central Square and traded blows most of the away before three late pins by the Redhawks at 172, 189 and 215 made the difference as the Wildcats lost, 42-28.
Austin Feisinger had WG’s lone early win at 110, pinning Landyn Dinegan in the third period. Logan Willis (126) claimed a forfeit as Dylan Radcliffe (138) outlasted Logan Frank 13-7.
At 152, Maxx Fesinger won10-1 over James Kimpel, followed by Jack Wade (160) topping Bryce St. Clair 10-4. Then Central Square clinched it prior to the finale at 285 where Derek Dishaw got a last-second pin over Troy Fonger.
