CENTRAL NEW YORK – While Baldwinsville’s wrestling team has dealt with plenty of rivalries in its long and rich history, the battle with Liverpool remains an annual touchstone.
So it was again Wednesday night when the Bees hosted the Warriors at Baker High School, but found itself mostly overwhelmed during a 58-9 defeat.
They opened at 160 pounds, with Brady Lescenski, Aaron Fredenburg and Nathan Cali each taking defeats before Judson Ferris, at 215 pounds, put B’ville on the board with a 5-1 decision over Joe Piscitelli.
Of the remaining seven bouts on the mat, though, the Bees prevailed just once, a pin by Keagan Hayes at 138 pounds over Marek Sokolowski.
Brennan Kline (102 pounds), Cael Bruce (110 pounds), Collin Zeman (126 pounds), Michael Spinner (132 pounds), Olu Gbenge (145 pounds) and Davian McLeod (152 pounds) all took losses.
This followed B’ville’s short trip to Phoenix on Dec. 10 for the Firebirds’ annual Round Robin Tournament, one where the Bees would finish with 127 points to get fifth place, just behind Liverpool’s fourth-place total of 135.
Fredenburg got close to the 172- pound title, only to take a 7-6 defeat to APW/Pulaski’s Connner Shaw, while Lev Schanzenbach (118 pounds) fell 10-1 to Auburn’s Mike Boyhan in his title bout.
Yet another Bees wrestler reached the final – Ferris, at 189 pounds, where he was pinned by Palmyra-Macedon’s Brett Rooks.
Hayes added a fourth-place finish at 138 pounds as he went 3-2, the same as Gbenge at 145 pounds and Zeman at 126. Schanzenbach’s 4-1 mark was also what Fredenburg and Ferris earned.
B’ville is on the road next Wednesday for another SCAC Metro division match, this one at Fayetteville-Manlius.
