ONONDAGA COUNTY – An eventful and sometimes troubling week for area high school girls swimming included a head-to-head meet between Fayetteville-Manlius and Christian Brothers Academy at Le Moyne College’s pool
Gathering all the points it needed in the early stages, the Hornets prevailed 93-87 over the Brothers to improve its overall mark to 5-1.
Georgia Langan and Elise Wratney each won two races, with Langan going 57.18 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle to beat Claire Krueger’s 1:00.25 after she won the 200 freestyle in 2:09.05 to Grace Reyna’s 2:12.60.
Wratney was first in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.18, and went from there to the 100 butterfly, where in 1:05.48 she was comfortably ahead of the 1:08.48 from CBA’s Jenna Filhan.
Reyna got a title of her own in the 500 freestyle, her 5:55.81 just ahead of the Brothers’ duo of Sofia Ciereck (5:56.58) and Zoe Thayer (5:57.89).
Cecilia Cao, in 1:14.81, beat out Krueger (1:15.59) in the 100 breaststroke and also helped Wratney, Gabby Dardis and Kate Millson finish first in the 200 medley relay in a quick 1:59.69. Langan and Reyna joined Cao and Lucy Fowler to go 1:48.76 to CBA’s 1:52.93 in the 200 freestyle relay.
Ella Zaryski did get a win for the Brothers in the 50 freestyle, her 26.13 seconds edging Cao’s 26.51, with Jenna Fuller going 1:06.79 in the 100 backstroke to beat Zaryski (1:06.71) by two-hundredths of a second. Sophia Osvoldik had the top score in diving of 167.45 points.
That same night, Jamesville-DeWitt hosted a strong Skaneateles side and took a 102-82 defeat to the Lakers.
Gwen Lister still won twice, going 26.06 seconds to beat Skaneateles’ Elizabeth Springer (26.60) in the 50 freestyle and taking the 100 breaststroke in a quick 1:09.71.
Margaret Lister added a 500 freestyle win, her 5:57.93 just ahead of Olivia Springer’s 5:59.38, while Kayla McQuaid earned 246.80 points in diving, with Zoe McCarthy (176.80) second.
Emma Paul took second in the 100 backstroke in 1:13.22 as, for the Lakers, Arianna Matthews was victorious in the 200 freestyle (2:07.69) and 100 butterfly (1:07.49), matched by Alice Spaulding taking the 200 individual medley in 2:17.91 and the 100 freestyle in 55.89 seconds.
J-D and CBA would both take part in Friday’s Salt City Sprint Invitational at Nottingham High School, where Gwen Lister, in the 100 breaststroke, would prevail in 1:08.35 to beat the state qualifying standard of 1:08.60. Filhan finished third in 1:18.83.
Elsewhere, Lister took third in the 50 freestyle in 25.93 seconds and, with Olivia Ogata, Margaret Lister and Thearyn Wales, get second in the 200 medley relay in 2:01.20.
