CENTRAL NEW YORK – Gaining its second victory of the season, the Baldwinsville gymnastics team took on Central Square last Tuesday night and, led by Sydney McKenney and Ava Wazen, defeated the Redhawks 120.4-116.2.
It was McKenney winning the floor exercise with an 8.6 routine while adding an 8.1 to win the vault. The Bees went 1-2-3 in the vault, Haylee Robinson scoring 7.9 and Wazen adding 7.8.
Lauren Millard stepped up on balance beam, her 8.6 routine eding the 8.5 from Central Square’s Lizzy Zacholi (8.4) as Robinson was second (6.7) and Wazen third (6.3) on uneven bars.
Zacholi, who won the uneven bars with 7.0, also claimed a tight all-around race, her 30.8 just one-tenth of a point ahead of McKenney’s 30.7 as Wazen got 30.3.
B’ville returns to action this Saturday against East Syracuse Minoa/Liverpool before next Monday’s regular-season finale against Jamesville-DeWitt/Fayetteville-Manlius.
Meanwhile, the Baldwinsville girls swim team had one more road trip to make.
The Bees went east, to New Hartford, competing last Monday night in the wake of its first win of the season over Syracuse City on Sept. 30.
And while the Spartans prevailed 90-82 on the team side, there was still some great efforts, with Eva Smith again at the forefront.
Smith, in the 200-yard freestyle, finished in one minute, 55.89 seconds, able to beat the state qualifying standard by more than a second and post the fastest time in Section III in that event this fall.
Later, in the 100 butterfly, Smith prevailed in 1:01 flat, ahead of the 1:04.44 from New Hartford’s Katie Lester, who had gone 2:01.85 in the 200 freestyle.
Mia Rinko was victorious in the 50 freestyle, her time of 27.59 seconds edging the 27.61 from the Spartans’ Jana Hans by two-hundredths of a second.
Henna Luke, in a clocking of 6:04.45, held off New Hartford’s Torie Kolek (6:07.23) for first place. Makenna Williams was second in the 200 indivdual medley in 2:48.38 to go with a 1:26.69 in the 100 breaststroke as Addison Grosso put up 1:17.54 in the 100 backstroke.
Rinko, aside from swimming the 100 freestyle in 1:01.95, helped Smith, Luke and Ava Corey go 2:06.10 in the 200 freestyle relay as the Bees went 2:21.33 in the 200 medley and 4:31.82 in the 400 freestyle relays.
B’ville has just one more home meet left, on Oct. 20 against Jamesville-DeWitt, before it prepares for the Section III championships in early November.
