ONONDAGA COUNTY – Once more, the Skaneateles girls swim team found the win column, doing so on Wednesday as it defeated Syracuse City 101-71 in a meet at the Community Center YMCA and improved to 4-2 on the season.
Six different times, the Lakers swept the top three in individual events, with Olivia Springer prevailing twice as she took the 200-yard freestyle in two minutes, 14.15 seconds over Ana Nichols (2:18.77) and Caity Vernak (2:28.44).
Then, in the 500 freestyle, Springer’s 5:57.80 pulled away from Sophia Soprano (6:13.93) as, again, Vernak was third.
Alice Spaulding would swim the 200 individual medley in 2:16.64, with Soprano second and Sophia Nichols third. Earlier, in the 200 medley relay, Spaulding, Arianna Matthews, Caitlin Comer and Elizabeth Springer would prevail in a clocking of 2:00.71.
On her own, Matthews won the 100 butterfly in 1:06.14 as Elizabeth Springer tore to a time of 25.66 seconds in the 50 freestyle, where Kyla Palmer was second in 27.26 and Maya Drotar third in 29.40.
Comer, in 1:01.15, pulled away from Marcella Buchholz (1:05.23) in the 100 freestyle, while Phoebe Bedard earned 192.75 points in diving, just ahead of the 189.75 from Skaneateles’ Tehya Gibson.
Matthews posted the quickest 100 breaststroke time of 1:16.65 after Elizabeth Springer, in 1:10.94, beat out Ana Nichols (1:14.62) in the 100 backstroke. Spaulding and Comer, paired with Nichols and Springer, swam the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.41.
A day earlier, West Genesee picked up some impressive individual victories against Cicero-North Syracuse at Nottingham High School, even though the Northstars prevailed on the team side 93-84.
The Wildcats’ Lily Mauro won the diving competition, her total of 228.30 points beating out the 220.75 from C-NS standout Kaitlyn Carroll and 208.85 from Sophia Sugrue.
Later, in the 100 freestyle, WG’s Maddie Owczarzak would win in 59.36 seconds, edging the 59.83 from the Northstars’ Leah Benedict. A thrilling 500 freestyle had Allison Putnam, in 5:46.67, finish inches behind the 5:46.65 from C-NS’s Kate Gucciardi.
Meeting Christian Brothers Academy on Thursday night at Le Moyne College, WG took a 94-86 defeat to the Brothers, only finishing first in two different events.
Mauro, with 228.15 points, went 1-2 in diving with Mikenna Komuda (199.50), while in the 200 medley relay Owczarzak, Putnam, Allie Ivery and Camille Bohli finished first in 2:11.86.
Putnam took second in both the 100 freestyle (1:00.63) and 100 backstroke (1:13.09), while Owczarzak was runner-up in the 50 freestyle in 28.17 seconds to Claire Krueger’s 27.76 and second in the 100 butterfly in 1:13.84.
