CENTRAL NEW YORK – What a 9-1 regular season did for the Skaneateles girls tennis team was place it atop the 10-team bracket for the Section III Class C team tournament.
The Lakers found out last Friday that it would face no. 8 seed Beaver River or no. 9 seed Westmoreland in Monday’s quarterfinals just as Marcellus, the no. 3 seed, met no. 6 seed Clinton in another quarterfinal.
Prior to that, Sknaeateles recorded a 7-0 shutout of Mexico last Thursday as Sofia Capozza handled Zoe Grzesik 6-0, 6-0, with Kenna Ellis topping Paige Masrouri 6-0, 6-1. Lily Miller beat Juliana Smith 6-3, 6-1.
Over in doubles, Isabelle Soderberg and Eva DeJesus had the closest match, handling Ella Blunt and Anita Druce 6-3, 6-2, while Kate Kissel and Emma Whipple rolled past Avery Mack and Grace Schipper 6-1, 6-0.
Keeping this up, the Lakers saw Bella Karpinski and Caitlin Day take out Isabella Ponzi and Juliana Smith 6-0, 6-3, just as Bryn Butler and Emme Decker won a single-set 8-2 match over Shealyn Burns and Morgan Benton.
Westhill would serve as the no. 7 seed in Class B, hosting no. 10 seed Carthage in last Friday’s opening round and advancing with a 4-1 victory over the Comets to earn a quarterfinal against no. 2 seed Oneida.
Again, West Genesee would not go into the sectional team tournament, but closed the regular season on Sept. 29 with a tough 4-3 victory over Cicero-North Syracuse to get to 4-3 overall.
Calina Olson handled Madelyn Shaw 6-2, 6-1 as Isabelle Wells did the same to Addyson Fedele 6-0, 6-2, with Hannah Sparks unable to hold an early lead in a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 loss to Ava Schiff.
In doubles, Ava Amodio and Kailyn Drury lost, 6-2, 6-4, to Megan Mieves and Lily Misco, but WG had Angelina Allen and Margaret Mello beat Eve Campalieto and Golden Duru 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) as Nicole Vasilev and Annemarie Myers handled Lauren Malac and Andre Iqbal 6-4, 6-3.
