CENTRAL NEW YORK – Despite all the rain that fell last week, area high school boys golf teams were able to get in plenty of matches knowing that cooler temperatures loomed.
Skaneateles had little trouble in last Tuesday’s match against Jordan-Elbridge, ignoring the soggy conditions to defeat the Eagles 212-259.
Tyson DiRubbo shot a 40 at Millstone, with Jack Marquardt getting a 41. Drew Mancini had a 42 and Graham Bradley a 43 as Will Cowden (46) and Tye Kennedy (51) followed, matching the low round from J-E’s Emerson Derby as Caden Hearn and Ben Weller both shot 57.
Then it was Skaneateles rolling past Cazenovia 208-245 in a Laker clash at Skaneateles Country Club. DiRubbo’s 37 was four clear of Mancini’s 41 as Chris Kelly led Cazenovia with a 41, but was followed by 43s from Marquardt and Will Murphy, plus a 44 from Ben Underhill.
Westhill was 6-1 heading into a tough match against Chittenango last Tuesday at Camillus Golf Club and needed every bit of its depth to pull out a 214-216 win over the Bears.
Chittenango teammates Alex Moesch, with a 36, and Ty Kelly, with a 37, putting up the two best individual scores, meaning the Warriors had to catch up.
Aiden Ryan, with a 39, led a quartet of Westhill golfers that included Devin Young (40), Grady Pens (41) and Danny Young (44), overcoming a 45 from Tanner Smith and 49s from Anthony Thousand and Henry Miller, though it took a 50 from Evan Chaddock to clinch the win.
These same two teams met again 24 hours later at Rogues Roost, the Bears’ home course, but here, led by Devin Young, Westhill won again, this time by a slightly larger 212-218 margin.
Shooting a 36, Devin Young was three clear of 39s from Moesch and Kelly. Ryan and Danny Young tied for fourth with 42, while Pens shot 43 and Christian Loomis clinched it with a 49.
West Genesee had both of its teams play last Wednesday, with WG Gold defeating Fayetteville-Manlius White 192-210 in a match at Westvale to improve its record to 7-3.
Ben Glass broke par with a season-best 33, while Jason Clifton also set a season mark with his 37. Ryan Till got a 40 ahead of 41s by Anthony Pirro and Jameson Bard as, for the Hornets, only Dylan Friedman (39) broke 40.
WG Blue was competitive against Liverpool at Foxfire, yet lost 196-201 as Jared Jaeger’s 38 only trailed the 36 from the Warriors’ Joe Sacco. Four other Liverpool golfers shot 40 ahead of the Wildcats’ Ashton Fassinger and Jake Einlich.
On Friday, WG Blue lost 183-212 to Cicero-North Syracuse Blue, even though Shields had a strong 37 in chilly conditions. Sean Lawler and Jack Wolanski both shot 34 for the Northstars as Jaeger had a 42 and Jonathan Lape shot 44.
After it faced Sknaeateles, J-E lost 231-252 to LaFayette last Wednesday at Orchard Valley. Hearn shot a 48, but it trailed the Lancers’ Joe Coletti (40) and Evan Fitzpatrick (42) as Eamon Willoughby shot 50, Derby and Dave Lawless both shot 51 and Conail Fraser had a 52.
A three-sided match followed on Thursday against Hannibal Phoenix, with J-E finally earning a victory, 236-237, over the Warriors, though the Firebirds posted 221 to beat both of them.
Hearn’s season-best 38 set the pace for the Eagles, well clear of Derby and Weller, each of whom shot 48. Fraser picked up a 49 and Lawless posted 53.
Then J-E won 262-277 over Phoenix on Friday afternoon, with Hearn shootnig a 48, just ahead of Weller’s 49 and Fraser’s 50 as Devin King had a 57 and Derby added a 58.
