CENTRAL NEW YORK – No one other than Christian Brothers Academy has been able to derail the efforts of the Skaneateles girls tennis team this fall.
And that included Marcellus, whom the Lakers faced last Wednesday afternoon and, in the resumption of that rivalry, the Lakers were victorious by a score of 5-2.
Sweeping the singles, Skaneateles had Kenna Ellis handle Lila Kelly 6-2, 6-1, while Lily Miller shut out Shaelyn Kelly 6-0, 6-0 as Sofia Capozza beat Xian Angotti 6-3, 6-0.
Marcellus got on the board in doubles when Sophie Clarke and Ella Lutwin beat Emerson Decker and Bryn Butler 6-2, 6-0, with Claire Wrona and Sydney Colon getting a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 win over Kate Kissel and Emma Whipple.
In a three-set battle, the Lakers’ Bella Karpinski and Caitlin Day won by claiming a 12-10 third-set tie-breaker over Abby Finn and Sofia Tufenkjian. Isabelle Soderberg and Eva DeJesus got past Katy Wangsness and Korrine Kemp in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
Back in action last Tuesday afternoon, the Lakers handled Phoenix 7-0 with shutouts from Miller, Ellis and Capozza in singles. Soderberg and DeJesus played the closest of the doubles matches, but handled Mia Graham and Sabrina Hayes 6-2, 6-3.
Westhill offered its own challenge to CBA last Wednesday in single-set matches that lasted to 10 games, and did earn a couple of points during a 5-2 loss to the Brothers.
In doubles, Isabella Johnson and Kathleen Rogers beat Hana Kang and Maddie Kanerviko 10-8, with Megan Battista and Samantha Burkett beating Gianna Moore and Monica Fallon by that same score.
However, CBA earned the other doubles points and, in singles, limited Westhill’s trio of Julia Fiegel, Phoebe Gunnar and Cadence Ramsing to just two total games.
West Genesee met up with long-time powerhouse Fayetteville-Manlius last Tuesday afternoon and, despite some fine efforts, could not pick a point off the Hornets in a 7-0 defeat.
Calina Olson and Angelina Allen led early in their doubles match but fell to Lina Limam and Kayla Quinn 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, with Helena Allen and Gwen Shope taking a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Lindsey Chong and Julia Comprix.
Up in singles, the closest match came from Isabelle Wells, who fell to Trisha Adavikolanu 6-4, 6-3 as Margaret Mello and Cindy Schlenker also took straight-set defeats for the Wildcats.
Faring better against first-place Baldwinsville on a chilly Friday afternoon, WG snared a pair of points, even as it lost, 5-2, to the Bees.
Allen prevented a singles sweep of B’ville’s part when she pushed Ella Clary to a third-set tie-breaker and was able to prevail 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).
Over in doubles, it was Hannah Sparks and Grace McInerney who paired up to beat Eva Pawelek and Carly-Ann Smith 6-4, 6-4, just as the Bees took every other match in two sets.
