CENTRAL NEW YORK – Though each of the area’s girls volleyball teams had taken at least one defeat so far, a few of the traditional powers remained successful on a regular basis.
Marcellus was back on the court last Wednesday night, taking on Mexico and putting together a 25-9, 25-8, 25-18 sweep of the Tigers.
Sarah Louer had eight aces to go with her 20 digs and three kills. Lauren Mahler got 15 digs, with Bryn Goldsworthy getting 13 digs and a team-best 10 kills. Carly Hopper added five kills and three assists as Chloe Kuttruff got 18 assists.
A 25-23, 25-21, 25-15 sweep of Homer followed on Friday, the Mustangs getting 23 assists from Kuttruff to a well-balanced front line.
Louer had seven kills, Goldsworthy six kills and Hopper and Bella Palen five kills apiece. Mahler, in addition to 18 digs, served up four aces, with Louer adding 17 digs.
A rare Saturday match had Marcellus battling past Oswego 25-23, 25-22, 25-18. Goldsworthy had eight kills and 12 digs, with Hopper getting six kills. Kuttruff managed 19 assists as Louer and Mahler got 10 digs apiece.
Skaneateles took a 4-2 record into last Monday’s match against Jordan-Elbridge and earned a 25-17, 25-12, 25-13 sweep of the Eagles, led by Maddy Bender’s nine aces, 25 assists and seven digs.
Ayla Pas’cal gave the Lakers eight kills and five blocks, with Kate Raddant adding seven kills and six digs. Alice Bender got 13 assists.
J-E, in defeat, got five assists from Sarah Lane, with Taylor Eaton earning three kills. Sydney Parsons had three aces and three kills as Lane and Kendra Anderson got five digs apiece.
A 25-12, 25-7, 25-10 romp over Altmar-Parish-Williamstown followed on Wednesday, with five aces apiece from Raddant, Maddy Bender (who got 12 assists) and Cydney Pitman. Raddant got six kills. Alice Bender earned eight assists.
Then, in Friday’s match with Solvay, Skaneateles made it through a 27-25 opening set before taking the next two sets by margins of 25-8 and 25-11.
Maddy Bender had 20 assists, 13 digs and four aces, with Alice Bender getting 19 digs. Raddant managed 10 kills and 16 digs as Pas’cal got six kills and Bella Shoenborn four kill. Franciamone had 11 digs as, for Solvay, Ashley Flicia had 12 assists and Neveah Baker got 22 digs.
Solvay met Phoenix last Monday and split the first two sets by equal 25-19 margins. Then, in the third, the Bearcats pulled it out 26-24 to go in front and won the fourth 25-20 to clinch the match.
Taylor Kadlubowski had six aces. five kills and 16 digs to equal Lisa Mendez as Gianna D’Eredita had 17 digs. Baker amassed 31 digs as Charlize Mitchell got six skills and Filicia earned 12 assists./
Two nights later, Solvay won the first set at Cazenovia 25-22 and, after dropping the second set 25-14, had all kinds of chances to both go in front and then extend the match in the third and fourth sets.
Both times, though, Cazenovia won them, 29-27 and 25-23, negating Filicia’s 17 assists and four aces. Hannah Haase got six kills and four aces, with Overend adding five kills. Baker amassed 27 digs.
Westhill returned to action Thursday and rolled past Institute of Technology Central 25-6, 25-9, 25-10. Emmie Sisack had 15 assists and six aces, with Alison Lancette getting eight kills and Ava Baty six assists. Sydney Medeiros paced the Warriors’ defense with 10 digs.
West Genesee went up against undefeated Baldwinsville last Tuesday night, the Wildcats falling to the Bees 25-20, 25-12, 25-21.
Cami Zajac picked up nine kills, with Olivia Snyder getting four kills and four aces to go with nine assists and seven digs. Sonya Dunham added seven assists as Sidney Hamilton got 10 digs.
Bishop Ludden lost last Tuesday to LaFayette 25-14, 25-17, 25-14. Turning it around on Thursday, the Gaelic Knights swept Syracuse Academy of Science 25-15, 25-9, 25-21 as Dunham amassed nine aces and nine kills, while Tess Murray had eight assists and Sarah Prowak added four kills.
J-E played Mexico last Thursday and lost 25-22, 25-21, 28-26 to the Tigers, each set close as Sydney Parsons gave the Eagles nine aces and matched Ryleigh Gill’s three kills.
Kendra Anderson had 13 digs, with Parsons and Sydney Lane earning 11 digs apiece and Brooke Chiaramonte 10 digs. J-E then lost on Friday to Hannibal in three sets.
