CENTRAL NEW YORK – Busy weeks for the Fayetteville-Manlius and Jamesville-DeWitt girls volleyball teams resulted in a string of victories until the two neighbors had a Saturday showdown with one another.
The Hornets dominated the first two sets, winning them by 25-11 and 25-8 margins. Then the Red Rams rebounded with a 25-15 win in the third, but F-M handled the fourth set 25-13 to close it out.
Zoe Myint finished with 21 assists, adding five aces and eight digs as her passes went to, among others, Kaylene Nobel, who had a team-best nine kills along with six digs.
Rebekah Beasley had six kills and 10 digs, with Kalyna Dannenberg adding five kills and four aces. Kathryn McNany matched Nobel’s total of six digs.
F-M started out the week with a 25-11, 25-7, 25-14 sweep over Nottingham where the Hornets recorded 29 aces, eight of them by Myint, who got 17 assists.
Nobel finished with six aces, while McNany had four aces and four digs. Beasley parked near the net and earned nine kills as Gretchen Stoppacher added three kills.
Meanwhile, J-D was handling Central Square at the start of last week’s action on Monday, the Red Rams rolling past the Redhawks 25-16 and 25-18 in the first two sets before a close 28-26 third set completed the sweep.
Cadence Milligan, with her 22 assists, passed it to Merris Kessler and Yeva Bayalan, who each had six kills, Bayalan adding four aces. Zamora McBride got four kills. Kanami LaClair and Claire Trevisani each got four digs.
In Wednesday’s 25-23, 25-8, 25-8 sweep of PSLA-Fowler, only the first set proved interesting. Sophia Zoghby had seven aces, with McBride and Celia Kemmis each earning five aces and Bayalan adding four aces. Mia Stewart had four kills as Milligan and Bayalan had seven assists apiece.
But J-D lost in four sets Thursday to Cicero-North Syracuse, splitting two close sets before the Northstars took over late in a 28-26, 25-27, 25-14, 25-10 decision.
With her 24 assists, Milligan passed it to Aaliyah Anderson, who had six kills, and Trevisani, who had five kills. Zoghby managed 12 digs as, for C-NS, Maddy Howell had 16 kills and seven blocks and Marissa Baker got 33 assists.
Bishop Grimes made quite the comeback in last Tuesday’s match against the Cato-Meridian Blue Devils.
After dropping the first two sets 25-21 and 25-13, the Cobras, on the brink of getting swept, pulled out the third set 25-22, then won a tense fourth set 25-23 and, in a back-and-forth final set, was again put to the brink and again pulled out of it, winning the match 17-15.
Through all of it, Tori Coppola produced 23 assists and nine digs. Avery Burnette added 10 digs as she got nine kills, with Tori Sikorski and Hannah Kinne each getting six kills. Remy Cleland had five kills as Ashley Ince earned 15 digs while equaling Kinne’s four aces. Sikorski and Burnette had three aces apiece.
Another five-set match followed on Thursday against Living Word Academy, with Grimes taking the second and third sets 25-15 and 25-22 after dropping the opener 25-16.
But the Lions rallied, took the fourth set 25-19 and the final set 15-9 to negate Burnette’s 16 kills and 13 digs. Sikorski had seven aces, 11 digs and three kills, while Ince had 18 digs, three aces and three assists. Coppola picked up 23 assists and 15 digs.
