CENTRAL NEW YORK – For now, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls volleyball team holds the mantle of Section III Class AA champions, but it just got reminded of who held the crown for so long.
Baldwinsville welcomed F-M last Monday night and then proceeded to put together a three-set sweep, topping the Hornets 25-20, 25-14, 25-17.
Constantly, B’ville’s power was on display thanks to Kyrah Wilbur’s 18 kills and Amelia Hahn’s 10 kills, the passes coming from Madison MacKaig, who earned 30 assists. Sadie Phelps recorded 11 digs.
F-M was able to turn it around on Friday in a rematch of last year’s sectional Class AA final against Cicero-North Syracuse.
After a 25-22 opening set, the Hornets blasted the Northstars 25-10 in the second and, with a 25-17 win in the third, completed the sweep as Zoe Myint got 28 assists, 12 digs and three aces.
Up front, Kaylene Nobel put away 17 kills, adding two blocks and seven digs. Kalyna Dannenberg had 11 kills and 11 digs, with Oksana Dannenberg also earning 11 digs to go with three aces and three assists.
Back on Monday night, Jamesville-DeWitt, swept by Fulton in its season opener, found itself two sets down to Auburn but made a big rally to beat the Maroons in five.
Auburn won the opener 25-21 and appeared to discourage the Red Rams when it won a long second set 29-27.
Instead, it was J-D who was energized, rolling through the third 25-16 and taking the fourth 25-20 to set up a final-set race to 15 that the Rams won, ousting the Maroons 15-11.
Cadence Milligan, earning 37 assists, passed it to a number of front-line players. Aaliyah Anderson had 15 kills, while Claire Trevisani had 11 kills and Merris Kessler got six kills. Zamora McBride picked up seven aces and eight digs.
J-D found itself in another long match Wednesday against Oswego, winning the opener 27-25 but then dropping each of the next two sets by the same 26-24 margin.
However, the Buccaneers started to slow down late and the Rams, winning the fourth set 25-16, went on to control the final set and earned a 15-9 decision.
‘
Milligan earned 19 assists, with McBride getting 12 assists to go with four kills and three aces. Anderson had five kills and five aces, with Kessler getting seven kills. Mia Stewart and Claire Trevisani had six digs apiece.
