CENTRAL NEW YORK – Area high school girls tennis teams started to hit the heart of their respective schedules during the first full week of September, only stopped by a series of rainouts.
Of them, Skaneateles was in the best position, thanks to a 2-0 start in August matches that included a tough 4-3 win over its Laker rivals from Cazenovia.
As a follow-up, on Sept. 2 the Lakers met Manlius-Pebble Hill and put together a 6-1 victory over the Trojans.
Of the three contested doubles matches, all were won in straight sets, Kate Kissel and Emma Whipple having the toughest time beating Amy Walsh and Ruby Butler 6-4, 6-4. In singles, Lily Miller routed Caroline Mezzalingua 6-0, 6-1, while Sofia Capozza topped Sabrina Loop 6-1, 6-4.
That win streak halted last Tuesday afternoon when Skaneateles ran into Christian Brothers Academy and could not get any points, falling to the Brothers 7-0.
Ellis and Miller lost their singles matches in two sets, as did all the doubles sides. Only Capozza got to a third set, pushing CBA’s Allie Mancini before taking a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2 defeat.
Skaneateles rebounded with a 7-0 shutout of Bishop Grimes on Thursday where Ellis played the lone singles match, blanking Sofia Ziankoski 6-0, 6-0.
Isabelle Soderberg and Eva DeJesus won 6-1, 6-1 over Riley Broton and Amelia Bonacci, with Kissel and Whipple beating Ashlee Brisson and Kristina Kovar 6-0, 6-0. Bella Karpinski and Caitlyn Day paired up for a 6-2, 6-0 win over Francesca Smith and Jynx Young.
Westhill started well on Sept. 1, shutting out Phoenix 7-0. Julia Flegel, Kate Hagrman and Mia Doss all won in singles, Doss battling past Sabrina Haynes 6-3, 6-4 as the Warriors dropped just one game in four doubles matches.
Marcellus handled Bishop Grimes 7-0 to improve to 2-0 on the season on Sept. 1, with Shaelyn Kelly beating Riley Broton in three sets as straight-set decisions went to Lila Kelly, Xian Angiotti and Katy Wangsness.
