CENTRAL NEW YORK – With some late-season momentum, the Cazenovia girls golf team made its way to nearby Woodcrest to take part in last Wednesday’s Onondaga High School League championships.
And two of the Lakers, Grace Probe and Sophie Clancy, were able to secure top-10 finishes to help their side tie Marcellus for fourth place with 471 as Christian Brothers Academy shot 395 to take the team title.
Probe, over 18 holes, shot a 101, putting her in a tie for sixth place, just five strokes behind the second-place score of 96 from CBA’s Grace Catalano, everyone chasing the winning 89 from Westhill’s Catherine Dadey.
Meanwhile, Clancy got close to matching Probe’s total, managing a 104 for ninth place. Claire Marris wasn’t far from the top 10, getting a 111 for 13th place as Chittenango’s Abby VanDee tied for 16th place with a 117.
Having beaten Chittenango for its first win of the season on May 13, the Lakers followed it up with an impressive 212-251 victory over Bishop Grimes last Monday at Cazenovia Country Club.
Amid soggy conditions, Sophie Clancy shot a nine-hole 42, well ahead of all other individuals as Grace Probe put up a 49. Claire Marris finished with a 56 and Jordan Bradley finished with a 65.
In a four-team match at Drumlins a day later, Cazenovia beat Manlius-Pebble Hill head-to-head by a 206-230 margin, with Probe shooting a 44 to tie the Trojans’ Amitees Fazeli for individual honors.
Marris, with a 46, was one behind MPH’s Parmees Fazeli (45), but the Lakers got away with a 49 from Clancy, well ahead of any other Trojans golfer as Bradley and Molly Wilcox both shot 67.
After the league tournament, Cazenovia lost a narrow 202-206 decision to Marcellus on Thursday, even though Probe led all individuals, her 44 beating the 45 from the Mustangs’ Allison Coombs.
Shooting another 46, Marris finished third, with Clancy adding a 49 for fourth place, but Marcellus caught up with the next five low round ahead of 67s from Wilcox and Bradley.
Chittenango played last Thursday and lost, 190-279, to CBA. VanDee had a 61, a number four players on the Brothers topped, led by Hana Kang and Bella Meade, who both shot 47. Ava Hohl gained a 70.
