ONONDAGA COUNTY – No matter who one roots for, the area’s three public high school boys lacrosse teams have gone through plenty of struggles contrasting its recent past.
Fayetteville-Manlius took its second shot at reigning sectional Class A champion Baldwinsville last Tuesday at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium and suffered a 14-8 defeat to the Bees.
Robert Madden found success against B’ville’s vaunted defense, scoring four times and adding an assist, while James Addonizio scored twice. Single goals went to Cooper Penoyer and James Hathorn.
Between them, Zach Spencer and Charlie Lorraine made 12 saves, but couldn’t keep everything out. Trey Ordway, with four goals, and Keegan Lynch, with two goals and five assists, led the Bees.
As a follow-up on Saturday afternoon, F-M challenged Section V powerhouse Victor, and despite an inspired effort it was not quite able to keep pace, losing to the Blue Devils 14-9.
Joe Hathorn had a three-goal hat trick, as did T.J. Conley. Madden added two goals as George LaCombe put in a goal and Charles Addonizio had an assist.
Jamesville-DeWitt got a much-welcomed respite last Monday in its 17-3 win over Cortland, the Red Rams steadily building a 16-2 margin on the Purple Tigers by halftime. Sam Brazell had five goals and four assists, with Gannon Kessler getting four goals and five assists as Eli Goldberg also scored four times.
Then, in its 17-7 win over Central Square a day later, J-D saw Kessler and Goldberg each score five times, with Kessler tacking on four assists.
Brazell put in three goals and earned three assists. Matt Keeler got two goals, with Mario Streiff getting a goal and two assists and Aidan Bates adding a goal.
When J-D shut out Oswego 13-0 on Thursday night, Brazell went to the forefront with six goals and one assist, while Kessler had three goals. Eli Goldberg scored twice and got a pair of assists.
The only catch with all this was that J-D had scheduled Baldwinsville for week’s end, and playing for the fourth time in six days, the Rams started slowly and lost, 16-6, to the Bees.
All through the first half, J-D struggled with face-offs, and extra possessions allowed B’ville to build an 11-2 margin, far more than the Rams could overcome as six different players – Brazell, Kessler, Streiff, Sean Boland, John Clinton and Lucas Patchen – had the six goals.
East Syracuse Minoa battered Cortland 19-4 last Tuesday, Jackson Palumb earning five goals and two assists. Dan Abreu stepped up, scoring four times, with Trey Jones getting two goals and three assists. Evan deBerjeois finished with two goals and two assists.
Then, in Thursday’s 14-6 win over Central Square, the Spartans saw deBerjeois set a career mark with six goals. Palumb scored four times, with Logan Welch earning two goals. Jones and Abreu had one goal apiece.
Even after these wins, though, ESM meet up with the same fate as F-M and J-D on Saturday afternoon, defeated in a big way during a 20-6 loss to Cicero-North Syracuse.
No Spartans player scored more than once as deBerjeois, Palumb, Welch, Abreu, Trey Jones and Dylan Jones had single goals. By contrast, six Northstars had multiple tallies, led by Mike Koehler and John Carter, who both put in four goals as Mason Ciciarelli got three goals and three assists.
