ONONDAGA COUNTY –
Defeats on consecutive Saturdays to Pittsford and Baldwinsville had slowed down a Christian Brothers Academy boys lacrosse team which had risen to no. 2 in the state Class C rankings.
And even when the Brothers left that tough scheduling stretch, it didn’t prove easy, CBA having to make a fourth-quarter comeback to beat LaFayette 18-13 last Monday night at Alibrandi Stadium.
Despite a 4-7 record coming into the game, the Lancers were able to answer everything the Brothers threw at them in a back-and-forth first half, eventually taking a 9-8 lead.
CBA still trailed when, in the fourth quarter, it started to win face-offs on a conststent basis and turned them into goals during a decisive 6-1 push.
Andrew Kohlbrenner, with six goals and two assists, led a Brothers attack that overcame five-goal outings by LaFayette teammates Jameson Bucktooth and Arrow Booth.
Dan Anderson got four goals, while Seamus Nicholson had three goals and one assist. Joe Papa scored twice as single goals went to Dan Ludington, Declan Landers and James Stanton.
A day later, CBA battled past Homer 11-7, not with any single run but by steadily earning a 9-5 advantage through three quarters, never letting the Trojans make any sort of sustained run.
Anderson’s three goals and two assists led a well-balanced attack. Landers and Kohlbrenner both had two goals and two assists, with Nicholson also converting twice. Papa had a goal and two assists and Ludington had one goal and one assist.
The Brothers then beat Marcellus 15-10 Thursday night, almost entirely because it jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and never let the Mustangs catch up.
Kohlbrenner, Papa, Nicholson and Anderson each netted three goals, with Kohlbrenner getting three assists and Papa two assists. Ludington contributed two goals as Landers got a goal and two assists.
Even when playing for the fourth time in six days Saturday against Ithaca, CBA still found enough energy to triple the Little Red’s production and prevail by a score of 21-7.
Six goals in each of the last three periods proved the steadiness of the Brothers’ efforts as Landers led the way, scoring six times and tacking on an assist.
Papa backed up his three goals with four assists as Dan Anderson also scored three times. Kohlbrenner had two goals and three assists as Nicholson and Ludington both got two goals and one assist. Marty Fallon, Ben Anderson, Sam Kuehner and Sean Broschart also had goals, with assists going to Joe Salvador and Phil Tanfredi.
