Each of the area’s high school track and field teams will take part in a variety of league championship meets throughout this week.
This followed a busy week that concluded with Skaneateles junior Kyla Palmer breaking her own school record in the 400-meter dash at the 54th annual Glenn D. Loucks Games in Poughkeepsie.
With a time of 56.32 seconds, Palmer put up the second-fastest time in New York State this spring, and only trailed the winning 55.37 from Robeson (Brooklyn) junior Anissa Moore.
As the regular season wound down last week, both of the Marcellus teams found themselves in showdowns against Cazenovia with first place in the OHSL Liberty division at stake.
The girls Mustangs lost, 96-45, to the Lakers, who swept to wins in most of the sprints and field events, but Marcellus still had some first-place finishes, too.
Heidi Steigerwald went two minutes, 35.3 seconds to win the 800-meter run, with Virginia Lucchetti going 5:30.3 to take the 1,500-meter run. Anella Bolster went 30 feet 7 inches to win the triple jump as Olivia Smolen had a top shot put toss of 24’2”.
Jordan-Elbridge had both of its teams take defeats last Wednesday against Mexico, the girls Eagles falling 96-31 and the boys taking a 114-26 loss to the Tigers.
On the girls side for J-E, Vassi Klock took the 400 hurdles in 1:09.2 as Tatianna Parkloap won twice, clearing 4’10” in the high jump and going 24’11 1/2” in the shot put. Avery Yard had a first-place triple jump of 29’2”.
Mexico also controlled the boys meet, though the Eagles had Alex Kunz take the 1,600-meter run in 5:01.9 and Peyton Bates run 3,200 meters in 11:41.8. Allen Cassick threw the discus 99’9 1/2”, just short of the 100-foot mark.
West Genesee faced Fayetteville-Manlius and Baldwinsville at the same time, falling 115-26 to the Bees but still having Peter McMahon run 1,600 meters in 4:25 flat and Dom Burris put up a long jump of 20’10”.
The younger Wildcats were in action Friday at B’ville’s John Arcaro Classic, along with Westhill, with each side recording a handful of top finishes.
McMahon led WG as he dominated the 3,200-meter run, his time of 9:25.69 more than 23 seconds ahead of Jamesville-DeWitt’s Alex Martinez (9:49.05) and the field.
Westhill’s boys saw Patrick Mahoney prevail in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet with fewer misses than, among others, teammate Carter Buckman, who finished third.
Kevin Moser gave WG a fourth-place finish in the 1,600 in 4:44.13, with Casey Comny eighth in 4:51.55 as Comny improved to fifth in the 800 in 2:06.09.
Drew O’Reilly, Carter Buckman, Brian Kenny and Brandon Mulholland took third in the 4×800 relay in 8:31.24.
For the Westhill girls, Angie Mesa-Espinosa finished second in the 100-meter dash in 12.65 seconds and then had a runner-up finish in the 200 in 25.89 seconds.
Isabel Young was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:13.53, with Kate Bendall seventh in the 100 hurdles and Mary Kate Rewakowski seventh in the long jump. Westhill’s girls were sixth in the 4×800 relay in 11:14.67
WG’s girls team featured Zoe Maupin going 11:24.10 for fourth place at 3,000 meters, with Karolina Lata (11:38.05) in sixth place. Claire Griffin was sixth in the 2,000 steeplechase in 8:33.03, with Giuliana Cannata seventh in the discus (76’1”) as Griffin helped the Wildcats take fourth in the 4×400 in 4:19.33.
J-E had Klock on hand, and she rose to second place in the 800 in 2:13 flat behind the 2;10.39 from Cicero-North Syracuse’s Hannah Boyle as Ashley Bolesh gave Westhill a third-place finish in 2:13.18 and WG’s Chloe Fetz was fifth in 2:23.33.
