EAST SYRACUSE – Hosting its own invitational track and field meet Monday afternoon, the East Syracuse Minoa girls track and field team finished a close second to Class AA power Liverpool.
The Spartans had 132 points, just behind the Warriors’ total of 134 points. Jamesville-DeWitt was fourth with 48 points, with Christian Brothers Academy eighth and Bishop Grimes ninth.
ESM’s Akuot Kuany claimed the 100-meter hurdles, her time of 15.68 seconds matching her previous school record and beating Liverpool’s Beatrize Gurgol (17.76) by more than two full seconds.
Then Kuany emerged victorious in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 3 inches as teammate Rhiannon Butchko was second with 4’10”.
Aryanna Finkelstein was first in the shot put with a throw of 32’10 1/2” as Sophia Jackson took third with 29’10”, edging J-D’s Hailey Webber (29’8”) in fourth.
Then Jackson won the discus with a 100-foot toss as Finkelstein got fourth place with 85’9”, and Margaret Mading capped it off with a winning triple jump of 32’5 1/2”, with Laura Sitnik (30’4”) fourth and J-D’s Kaitlyn Laubenstein third with 30’6 1/2”.
Arianna Brennen took second in the pentathlon with 2,388 points, just behind the 2,436 from Tully’s Emma Byrne as J-D’S Brooke Hulbert was third with 1,968 points.
In the 4×100 relay, Sophia Jackson, Rylie King, Kaleigh Maloof and Evanni McDuffie were second in 51.24 seconds, edged out by Liverpool (51.15), with J-D third in 52.75 to go with a fourth in the 4×800 relay.
Rachael Ladd got second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:59.3 and was third at 3,000 meters in 11:56.75, while Amber Hayes took third in the 400 hurdles in 1:13.67. Taylor Hoffman was sixth at 1,500 meters.
J-D’s 4×400 relay team of Madeline Carter, Norah Kirch, Victoria Payne and Jaden Clemons-Butenko took second in 4:20.94, just behind Liverpool’s 4:20.52 as ESM was third in 4:26.01. Maeve Murphy was second in the long jump with 15’6 1/2” as the Spartans’ Margaret Mading took sixth.
Bishop Grimes had Rosalie Vincent win the 100-meter dash in 12.52 seconds, with McDuffie fourth as Vincent went on to take the 200-meter dash in 26.14 seconds, half a second clear of the field.
CBA went 1-2 in the 800-metet run, Grace Fletcher winning in 2:27.23 and Bella Cannizzo second in 2:30.14. Grimes’ Katharine Murphy was fourth in the discus (84’1”) and Ashlyn Fuller was fifth in the pole vault as she and ESM’s Akasha Nunnaly both cleared 7 feet.
There was also a boys specialty meet where ESM’s Michael Parks continued his dominance in the 110 hurdles, winning in 14.82 seconds as Rocky El was second in 15.44.
El would win twice in the jumping events, unleashing a top triple jump of 41’1” as no one else broke the 39-foot mark and claiming the long jump with 21’7”, with Parks (19’5”) in fifth place.
Parks also was second in the high jump, clearing 5”8”, the same as Central Square’s Aidan Greene, but with more misses as Adam Sullivan took third topping 5’6”.
The Spartans were also third in the 4×100 in 45.93 seconds as CBA’s quartet of Chris Zajdel, Syair Torrence, Remir Ratchford and Darien Williams won in 45.38.
Kevn Hasty, throwing the discus 114’2”, was second, two inches away from victory as PSLA-Fowler’s Malcolm Starling won with 114’4”.
Luke Mancini cleared 10’6” for third place in the pole vault, with J-D’s Cameron Corona (9’6”) fourth. Caleb Byrd took third in the 800 in 2:05.81, with teammate Joseph Pedrosa-Garcia fifth as Grimes’ Sean Moran got fourth place in 2:07.05.
J-D’s best boys finish was in the 3,000 steeplechase, where Ashton Corona got second place in 11:00.7 and James Hillers was fourth in 11:42.7 as Liverpool’s Ryan Hagan won in a blistering 9:25.7.
