CENTRAL NEW YORK – Coming off a big come-from-behind win over Cortland April 22 that put its record at 3-1, the Solvay softball team found itself in another high-scoring game last Monday, but this time lost, 14-11, to Christian Brothers Academy.
The Bearcats led 4-2 and surrendered that lead, only to score five times in the fifth inning and twice in the sixth to gain an 11-10 edge before the Brothers used four runs in the seventh to go in front for good.
Natalie Orr singled, walked three times and got three RBIs. Jenna Wing and Gianna D’Eredita each drove in a pair of runs as Hannah Haase added an RBI. Erin Nardella and Avery Bowman each hit home runs for CBA.
CBA then faced Westhill a day later, but had a far different result as the Warriors jumped all over the Brothers in a 22-6 victory that featured a power surge from the Warriors’ Alexa Korrie.
Twice, Korrie went deep for home runs, also getting two doubles on her way to three RBIs and scoring five runs. Hannah Schmitz scored four times and got a pair of hits, with Tori Milliti, Kalista Czaplicki and Abby Cottrell also getting two hits.
Westhill then played Solvay on Thursday and the Warriors prevailed 9-1, using a three-run third inning and four-run fifth inning to break the game open.
Schmitz went three-for-four with three RBIs, while Korrie was three-for-three and drove in two runs. Johnston and Cottrell added RBIs as pitcher Nicoletta Scrimale struck out six and overcame seven hits, two each by Wing and D’Eredita.
On Friday afternoon, Westhill lost, 14-6, to Chittenango, its record falling to 5-3 overall.
West Genesee took a 5-4 defeat to Oswego last Monday afternoon, falling behind 3-0 in the first inning but tying it, 3-3, by the end of the second.
Third and fifth-inning runs put the Buccaneers ahead for good, and though the Wildcats converted once in the bottom of the fifth, it could not pull even. Sophia VanHorn had two triples and a single, driving in a pair of runs as Kyra Lynch added a single, double and RBI.
Playing again on Friday, WG lost, 4-1, to Rome Free Academy. Anna Drogo drove in the Wildcats’ lone run in the third to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Black Knights got two runs in the fifth to get away. Van Horn finished with a pair of hits. A 12-2 defeat to Cicero-North Syracuse followed on Saturday afternoon.
Jordan-Elbridge was back in aciton on Saturday and swept a doubleheader from Mexico, beating the Tigers by scores of 7-4 and 13-8 to improve to 5-1 on the season.
In the opener, Abby Ahern had three hits, with Ava Hildebrandt adding two hits as Erin LaVancha and Abby DelFavero each scored twice. The second game saw the Eagles score in each of the first four innings, but still need a three-run sixth to put the game away.
The second game had J-E pull clear with seven total runs in the third and fourth innings. Hildebrant and LaVancha each produced three hits and three RBIs, with Hildebrant scoring four times as Erin Hill got two RBIs. DelFavero and Ahern had two hits apiece.
