CENTRAL NEW YORK – As high school baseball teams picked up their activity late in the week, Solvay provided a particular highlight.
Pitchers Dan Mrowinski and Jonathan Gonzalez-Perez combined to throw a no-hitter last Thursday as the Bearcats recorded a 10-0 victory over the Chittenango Bears.
Mrowinski managed, in five innings of work, to not surrender a hit despite six walks. Then Gonzalez-Perez closed it out with a scoreless inning of work. At the plate, Ty Martineau went three-for-three with three RBIs to match Gonzalez-Perez.
This happened three days after a local showdown between Solvay and Marcellus went in favor of the Bearcats, who cranked up its production at the plate while beating the Mustangs 14-6.
Solvay scored two runs in each of the first three innings, then added five runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth Gonazlez-Perez had a home run, single and four RBIs to pace the Bearcats.
Justin Palmisano had three hits and drove in two runs as every player in the Solvay lineup drove in at least one run, with Mrowinski, Jordan Dippold and Zach Balduzzi each scoring twice. For Marcellus, Adam Sullivan and Colin Johnson had two RBIs apiece.
All of this success made last Friday’s 18-2 loss to Christian Brothers Academy a bit easier to take. The Brothers put together a 14-run second inning, the lone Bearcat runs coming home on Balduzzi’s fourth-inning single.
Skaneateles won three of four games in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during the school break. The Lakers topped Madison (Ohio) twice by scores of 12-6 and 3-0, and beat Beaver Area (Pennsylvania) 17-1 while taking an 8-0 defeat to South Range (Ohio).
Back home, Skaneateles rolled past Bishop Grimes 12-1 last Thursday as Emil Sander homered, singled twice and drove in five runs. Patrick Herr and Cal Anna each had two RBIs as Nate Shattuck and Scott Scherrer combined to hold the Cobras to three hits, striking out seven.
Westhill also won last Monday afternoon, taking on Mexico and blanking the Tigers 10-0. A six-run first inning set the tone, with two more runs in each of the next two innings.
Tyler Campbell tripled, doubled and drove in three runs, with Ryan Campbell, Taden Chester and Geoff Daniul earning one RBI apiece. Combined, pitchers Aiden Kerr and Dominic Zawadzki held Mexico to one hit.
Just as impressive was Saturday’s 12-0 shutout over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill where Zawadzki, Madigan and Ryan Campbell combined to limit the Red Devils to five hits while managing 11 strikeouts.
A four-run first inning and five-run third inning gave the Warriors most of its production, with Madigan and Chester each getting three RBIs as Kerr and Tyler Campbell had three hits apiece. Ryan Campbell contributed a pair of RBIs.
