CENTRAL NEW YORK – Most of the area’s high school boys tennis teams would have to wait until late in the week to resume action after all the snow that fell early on Tuesday morning.
Things were still dry, though, when Marcellus took on Onondaga/Westhill last Monday afternoon, with the Mustangs prevailing in a 4-1 decision.
Chris Babaro was unable to finish his singles match against Shay Smyth. Elsewhere, Matt Vitale won 6-4, 6-1 over Jon Massaro, with Tucker Guerrina handling Christian Loomis 6-0, 6-2.
Leading a doubles sweep for Marcellus, Tyler Szalach and Mike Devereaux handled Zane Eldred and Caleb Fowler 6-0, 6-2 as Caeden Cox and Dan Fox won 6-2, 6-1 over Evelynn Loan and Faith Taylor.
This happened as Skaneateles improved its record to 3-0 by taking on Phoenix and claiming every point from the Firebirds in a 5-0 romp.
Of the three singles matches, only James Lovier gave up a game for the Lakers, but he still handled Isaiah Gordon 6-0, 6-1 as Max Karpinski and Jake Salzhauer both had 6-0, 6-0 wins over, respectively, Cayden McKay and Liam Campanino.
Each of the doubles matches were 6-0, 6-0 wins, too, as Hatcher Gutchess and Marty McNeil beat Dylan Jones and Robert Reynolds, while Jackson Kennedy and Evan Wingfield beat Jason Hilton and Austin Moore.
The Lakers made it four in a row on Wednesday against Manlius-Pebble Hill, surrendering a point but still getting a 4-1 win over the Trojans.
McNeil swept Joh Howard 6-0, 6-0 as Salzhauer beat Abe Salomon 6-0, 6-1. In the best of the three singles matches, Karpinski was pushed to a third set by Anthony Pitts, but won 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Evan wingfield and Jackson Kennedy lost in doubles, but Hunter Gutchess and Marcus McClanahan were successful, defeating Alex Fung and Matt Ma 6-1, 6-2.
Marcellus won, too, blanking LaFayette 5-0 as Vitale and Guerrina did not surrender a game in their singles wins and Barbaro topped Paul Coon 6-0, 6-3. Cox and Fox also won in straight sets, as did Szalach and Devereaux, who topped Ben Haskins and Mark Humphrey 6-0, 7-6.
The win streak for the Mustangs ended Friday with a 4-1 defeat to Christian Brothers Academy, with Vitale rallying in singles to beat Soren Kang 4-6, 6-0, 7-5, but the Brothers claiming every other point in straight sets.
OCS/Westhill got a 3-2 win over Westhill on Friday, getting the clinching point when Loomis, one game from defeat, rallied past Isaiah Gordon 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 to back up straight-set singles wins by Smyth and Massaro.
