CENTRAL NEW YORK – Much of the week for area high school softball teams involved waiting for all the snow to melt and for the ground to dry again before games could resume.
When it did, though, there was plenty to celebrate, especially at East Syracuse Minoa, where Olivia Goff achieved a no-hitter in last Thursday’s 10-0 victory over Oswego.
Surrendering just one walk and having one error, Goff otherwise kept the Buccaneers from even reaching base, recording 13 strikeouts in her gem.
At the plate, the Spartans netted five first-inning runs and doubled the total from there. Morgan Ransom went three-for-three and scored three runs as Goff got a pair of RBis. Ava Burry and Natalie Quonce also drove in runs as Quonce and Madalynn Ryan each scored twice.
A satisfying week for ESM concluded Saturday when it beat Christian Brothers Academy 9-3. Ransom again was three-for-three at the plate, scoring three times, while Quonce and Brooke Kirkpatrick got two hits apiece and Kirkpatrick produced a pair of RBIs.
The loss snapped the Brothers’ season-opening four-game win streak, though Avery Bowman did have two hits and scored a run, Mackenzie Witz contributing an RBI.
Jamesville-DeWitt is set to face ESM on Tuesday, and when it resumed action last Thursday the Red Rams pounded Syracuse City 26-2, exploding for eight runs in both the first and third innings.
Kate Dorazio hit a home run, doubled and finished with three RBIs. Kayla McQuaid went three-for-three and drove in five runs as Miriam Zoghby, Kaira McMahon, Emily Bulone and Alexa Clemons-Butenko had two RBIs apiece.
Blanking Oswego 15-0 on Friday afternoon, J-D did most of its damage in an 11-run fourth inning, and then went to the Rochester area for a Saturday touranment.
It was here that J-D took its first loss, 9-3, to host Victor, a five-run fourth inning helping the Blue Devils get away, but it rebounded to beat Williamsville North 16-6.
Against North, Bulone was a force at the plate, bashing two home runs, adding a triple and two singles and finishing with five RBIs. Zogbhy, McMahon, Emma White and Stella White contributed two hits apiece.
This happened as CBA faced Jordan-Elbridge and, in a clash of unbeaten sides, the Brothers edged the Eagles 4-3.
Mackenzie Witz and Allison Boule each got two hits, with Boule joining Giuliana Sindoni, Erin Sardella and Hannah Reilly in the RBI column. Juliette Zimmerman limited J-E to four hits and struck out six.
At least Fayetteville-Manlius was able to play last Monday before the snows, taking on Rome Free Academy and pulling out a 4-3 victory over the Black Knights.
A fourth-inning run allowed the Hornets to erase a 1-0 deficit before it struck for three runs in the top of the fifth. RFA countered with a pair of sixth-inning runs to move within one, but F-M held on, improving its overall record to 3-2.
Then F-M challenged Liverpool at Carrier Park last Wednesday night, more than holding its own yet still taking a 3-2 defeat to the Warriors.
Gracie Bishop singled, doubled and drove in a run as Gwen O’Connor added an RBI and Megan Woodridge scored. Natalie Mayne pitched and gave up six hits, three of them to opposing pitcher Cassie Wiggins, who earned a pair of RBIs.
Playing again on Thursday against Baldwinsville, the Hornets could not slow down the Bees, taking a 6-1 defeat. A four-run second inning put B’ville in control, and all F-M could manage was a fourth-inning tally, Emily Wilson driving home Evie Russell.
Two days later, these same sides met again, and the Hornets fell 12-2 to B’ville, Bishop singling home Avery Howe and Paige Graves in the top of the first, but the Bees answering with all 12 of its runs in the first two innings.
