CENTRAL NEW YORK – Some of the area’s high school track and field teams would find themselves in competition early during the week of the April school break.
Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy both had strong performances during Tuesday’s Westhill Spring Break Invitational.
It included Alex Martinez victorious for J-D at 1,600 meters in 4:37.49, with Hudson Groat seventh. Caleb Smith triumphed in the long jump with a top leap of 20 feet 10 inches.
Sam Smith, Will Westpfal, Ryan Carter and Andres Valladares were second in the 4×400 relay in 3:41.48. Nick Dekaney, in the 100-meter dash, had his time of 11.34 seconds topped only by the 10.89 from Baldwinsville’s Sam Mellinger, this to go with a second in the 200 hurdles in 27.50 seconds as Shane Gargiulo (28.83) was fourth.
Caleb Smith (11.47) was fifth in the 100 before he took third in the 200-meter dash in 23.18 seconds. Ashton Corona was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:07.73. Cade Fowler was sixth (95 feet) and Shaun Gladle seventh (92’1”) in the discus, with George Grigorian ninth as Dekaney got sixth (5’4”) in the high jump.
J-D’s Brooke Hulbert went 33.02 seconds in the girls 200-meter hurdles for fifth place, while Hailey Webber was fifth in the shot put with 29’9”.. Victoria Payne was eighth in the 200-meter dash and helped the Rams take fifth in the 4×400 relay in 4:31.02. Kaitlyn Laubenstein was ninth in the triple jump.
For CBA, Cooper Groat won the boys 800-meter run in a swift 1:58.17, with J-D’s Sam Smith seventh in 2:04.48. Grace Fletcher was second in the girls 800 in 2:26.30.
A day earlier, in the Tully Coed Spring Invitational, Bishop Grimes had Rosalie Vincent win two sprints, going 13.49 seconds in the 100 to beat the field by nearly half a second.
Then, in the 200-meter dash, Vincent struck again, her 27.38 seconds nearly two seconds better than anyone else as Jenna Sloan finished fifth in 30.18.
Vincent earned six more points with a third-place long jump of 14’4”. Edy Livingston was fifth in the 3,000-meter run, with Katherine Murphy third in the discus (80’4”) and fifth in the shot put. Jason DeVorte was fifth in the boys discus.
