CENTRAL NEW YORK – Having battled back for a road win at Indian River in its April 2 opener, the Skaneateles boys lacrosse team built upon that effort with more impressive wins in the first full week of the month.
The Lakers ripped past Oswego 15-2 last Tuesday night, this time playing a strong first half that resulted in a 12-1 advantage and a chance for the entire roster to see action during the second half.
Grayson Brunelle, Jack Torrey and Ethan Hunt had matching three-goal efforts, Brunelle getting two assists as Colin Morrissey had two goals and two assists. Sean Kerwick got two goals and one assist, with Jeff McCrone and Cooper Morrissey also finding the net.
Two nights later, Skaneateles hosted Christian Brothers Academy, who was fresh off a season-opening win over West Genesee and did not have a letdown here, pulling away to top the Lakers 14-7.
Leading most of the way, CBA got five goals from Declan Landers and four goals from Seamus Nicholson. Brunelle, with four goals and one assist, accounted for more than half the Skaneateles production as Morrissey had two goals and two assists. Hunt added a goal as McCrone and Dominick Caraccio also had assists.
On Saturday, Skaneateles brought back its defense in an 8-2 victory over South Jefferson. Renaud was sensational, stopping 16 of the Spartans’ 18 shots as Brunelle, Morrissey and Kerwick each scored twice, Brunelle adding two assists.
Marcellus had dropped its season opener, 13-10, to Auburn, but got into the win column last Tuesday when it went to Tully and claimed a wild 21-13 decision over the Black Knights.
Adam Rayfield, in particular, stood out, tearing up Tully for seven goals and one assist. Doryn LeClair matched Rayfield’s point total with four goals and four assists.
Chris Doshna and Donovan Fraher both scored twice and combined for seven assists as Nick Rayfield got three goals. Brady Hubbard, Jacob Kernes and Dieter Steigerwald earned single goals.
In Saturday’s 21-10 win over Whitesboro, Marcellus pulled away by outscoring the Warriors 10-1 in the second half, with Adam Rayfield building on what he did against Tully.
All that Rayfield did was pick up 15 points from 10 goals and five assists. Doshna helped out with three goals and one assist, while Sam Barney and Marcus Darminio both got two goals and one assist.
Westhill bounced back in a big way from losing April 2 to Liverpool, taking on Jordan-Elbridge and controlling all phases of the game in routing the Eagles 18-3.
Kyle Rosenberger and Charles DeMore each scored four times for the Warriors, Rosenberger adding three assists. Luke Gilmartin, Kyle MacCaull and Owen Etoll had three goals apiece. Wade Brunelle, Bryan Tanner and Nixon Karcz picked up J-E’s goals.
When J-E faced Marcellus on Thursday, it was just as lopsided, the Mustangs prevailing 17-2 as it bolted out to a 12-1 halftime lead.
Adam Rayfield got five goals and one assist. LeClair, with four goals and two assists, matched that point total as Fraher got three goals and one assist. Doshna had two goals and two assists. Single goals went to Steigerwald, Jeff Lantry and Luke Spitzer. Brunelle and Jadyen Castaldo accounted for the only Eagle goals.
Westhill improved to 2-1 on Friday, beating Tully/Fabius-Pompey 16-6. Building a 13-4 lead through three quarters, the Warriors were led by Gilmartin’s five goals and two assists.
Rosenberger scored four times, with MacCaull getting three goals and one assist. Etoll had two goals and Brian Allen got three assists, Emmet Starowicz adding two assists. Single goals went to Charles DeMore and Sean Rogers.
When J-E beat Holland Patent 19-7 on Saturday, it gained new head coach Shaun Smith his 200th win, Brunelle and Mullen both netting five goals as Brunelle added six assists.Karcz had three goals and three assists.
