SYRACUSE – No one stood out more for the West Genesee boys swim team this season than diver Bryan Reichert, capped off by a superb performance at the Section III championships.
By finishing second overall, Reichert earned the points necessary to advance to the March 4-5 New York State Public High School Athletic Association championsihps at Ithaca College.
In the Class A portion of the sectional meet Feb. 12 at Nottingham High School, Reichert established his credentials by picking up 428.20 points, good for second behind Fayetteville-Manlius’ Connor Gleasman (466.80) as Wildcats teammate Ethan Martin finished eighth with 368.10.
Moving on to Tuesday’s state qualifier, Reichert still found himself short of the 450-point standard NYSPHSAA established to get to the state meet.
But with a solid group of dives, Reichert worked his total to 508.9 points, breaking a school record, and easily clinched the berth, passing Gleasman (505.2) and only trailing Mexico’s Kian Long, who won with 537.4 points.
In all eight Section III divers advanced to the state meet. Reichert, Long and Gleasman are joined by Jack Tonkin (Oswego), Patrick Scott (New Hartford), Will Patterson (Fulton), Andrew Harriger (Mexico), Christina Jackson (Weedsport) and Patterson
As to the swimming portion of the sectional Class A meet, WG had Ryan Goshow, Jack Kilroy, Angus Tarolli and Tom Parisi finish seventh in the 200-yard medley relay in one minute, 56.83 seconds, a season best.
Mason Reichert joined Bryan Reichert, Ethan Martin and Matt Keiling to take ninth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.69, a finish matched by Parisi, Keiling, Goshow and Tarolli in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:46.43.
In the 500 freestyle, Goshow finished 11th in a season-best 5:35.71. Tarolli made his way to 11th place in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.98.
Parisi took 14th in the 100 freestyle in 55.06 seconds and 16th in the 50 freestyle in 24.68 seconds. Keiling was 15th in the 200 freestyle in 2:07.34, with Kilroy 15th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.14.
