SYRACUSE – Plenty of winning performances were put together by the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool wrestling teams during last Saturday’s Section III Class AA championships at Henninger High School.
Yet even with three wins apiece, the Northstars, with 194 points, and the Warriors, with 173 points, had to settle for the two spots in the team standings behind Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy, who sent seven wrestlers to the finals and finished with 211.5 points.
C-NS had all of its victories in higher weight classes. Trey Dermody-Latham, at 189 pounds, pinned J-D/CBA’s Bryce Dadey in 80 seconds as Kamdin Bembry won at 215 pounds with a second-period fall over Dadey’s teammate, Ben Paul.
Up at 160 pounds, John Sherbourne continued his stellar campaign, moving to 21-2 as he pinned Baldwinsville’s Judson Ferris in overtime of a tense semifinal before getting his pin over West Genesee’s Colin McAvan just before the second period concluded.
As for Liverpool, it got a tough victory from Rocco DeGilormo at 110 pounds, DeGilormo claiming an 8-7 classic over C-NS’s Anthony Ciciarelli in the semifinals before edging Logan Willis (West Genesee) 3-1 in a tense title bout. Ciciarelli went on to finish third by pinning teammate Drew Baker.
Tyler Vivacqua went to the top at 132 pounds, beating Rome Free Academy’s Chad Tenant 10-4, while Jonah Geller earned his victory at 145 pounds by pinning Kyle Sykes (Fayetteville-Manlius) midway through their title bout. Both won semifinals over J-D/CBA wrestlers – Vivacqua against William BeSeth, Geller over Garett Williams.
For the Northstars, Kennedy Thomas was the only other finalist, at 126 pounds, beaten 12-4 by RFA’s Ashton Thompson as the Warriors’ Mohammed Yousuf reached the final 138 pounds before a 9-0 loss to WG’s Maxx Fesinger.
Pierce Goodave edged Kevin Mossow 2-0 to give Liverpool a third-place finish at 110 pounds. More followed as Connor Kral beat C-NS’s Ayden Sprague 7-3 at 172 pounds, Owen Atchie (160 pounds) pinned B’ville’s Judson Ferris and Cade Leombrone, at 285 pouns, won 5-1 over another Bees werstler, Korben Haney.
Dominick Racht was fourth at 132 as C-NS saw Dan Garcia (189 pounds) beat Liverpool’s Jayce Bliss for fifth place and Joe Kozubowski (285) also was fifth. Nick Ault got the Warriors sixth place at 138 pounds, with the Northstars’ Sean Aldrich matched at 145.
