SYRACUSE – By earning a place in seven of the 13 championship bouts, the Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy wrestling team earned the Section III Class AA title.
In Saturday’s sectional AA meet at Henninger High School, the Rams accumulated 211.5 points, enough to hold off Cicero-North Syracuse (194 points) for the top spot as Liverpool was third with 173 points.
Twice, J-D/CBA made it to the top of the podium, starting with Matt Dougherty at 102 pounds as he blazed to the finals and then pinned Auburn’s Mike Boyhan in just 46 seconds.
Meanwhile, at 152 pounds Gerald Vielhauer prevailed largely on the strength of his tough semifinal, a 5-4 decision over Baldwinsville’s Max Naples. The title bout saw Vielhauer pin Naples’ teammate, Aaron Fredenburg, late in the second period.
In each of the four highest weight classes, J-D/CBA had finalists, from Leonardo Tallarico at 172 pounds to Bryce Dadey at 189 pounds, Ben Paul at 215 pounds and Cameron Beecher at 285 pounds.
Of the four, only Tallarico got a decision, falling 7-2 to C-NS’s Dylan Firenze, while at 110 pounds Jordyn Hill got to the final, only to run into B’ville’s Aidan Cali, who won and was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
William BeSeth earned third place at 132 pounds by outscoring C-NS’s Dominick Racht 15-9 in the consolation bracket final, with Garrett Williams (145 pounds) beating Syracuse’s Malik Egerton 9-2 to also finish third.
Michael Darling finished fourth at 215 behind Paul, with Luke Butler sixth at 285 as Mason Porter (138 pounds) and Jacob Carlson (126 pounds) each took fifth place, Porter by pinning Liverpool’s Nick Ault in 59 seconds.
As for Fayetteville-Manlius, it earned 80 points for seventh place, with Kyle Sykes, at 145, pinning Egerton in the last seconds to reach the final before a loss to Liverpool’s Jonah Geller.
Jackson Schwab, to finish third at 215, pinned Darling late in the first period, while Sam Reikes was fourth at 102 and Trent Gloo fourth at 126. Harrison Schwab, at 118 pounds, beat Dontae Smith (Syracuse) 7-5 for fifth place as sixth-place finishes went to Paul Cange (132) and Evan Froio (172).
In the sectional Class A tournament at Carthage High School, East Syracuse Minoa finished eighth in a 10-team field with 48 points as Indian River (231 points) edged Fulton (227 points) for the top spot.
Only Max Wunderlich, at 285, reached the finals, pinning IR’s Davin DeWaine late in the third period of the semifinal before New Hartford’s Charles Tibbits pinned Wunderlich in the title bout.
Colin Zweisler finished fourth at 189, while ESM got a fifth-place finish from Karlo Vergne at 110 when he pinned Fulton’s Brady Niver late in the first period.
