CENTRAL NEW YORK – Against some top opposition, the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool boys swim teams met up with some divergent results, even as many individuals stood out.
The Northstars were successful in last Tuesday’s meet against Oswego, improving to 3-6 on the season as it pushed past the Buccaneers 94-83.
Jacob Griffin won the 50 freestyle in 24.20 seconds after he took first in the 200 freestyle in 2:00.80. He also paired with Caden Griffin, Noah Mingolelli and Noah Ritchie to take the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.32.
Getting a title of his own, Caden Griffin swam the 50 freestyle in 24.20 seconds as Ritchie beat the field in the 500 freestyle in 5:54.69.
More wins followed as Anthony Gabrielli went 1:03.87 in the 100 backstroke and Reece Balduzzi, in 1:17.35, edged Connor Burke (1:17.65) in the 100 breaststroke.
When Liverpool went up against undefeated Fayetteville-Manlius that same night, despite some fine performances the Warriors lost 97.5-82.5 to the Hornets.
Leading the charge, Jack Cavallerano picked up a victory in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.01 seconds and, later in the meet, paired with Nate Alexander, Geoff Race and Solomon Panayil to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.37 to F-M’s second-place 1:39.26.
Alexander, for his part, would claim a victory in the 500 freestyle in 5:26.56, with Ryan Gublo posting the fastest 100 breaststroke time of 1:10.59, just ahead of the 1:11.78 from the Hornets’ Anthony Bottar.
Colin Gridley had 206.03 points in diving, second to F-M’s Connor Gleasman (243.38). Cavallerano finished second in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.16, with Race second in the 200 individual medley in 2:19.18.
Quinn Smith and Cooper Hughes won two races apiece for F-M. Smith rolled to first in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.20 and the 100 backstroke in 56.77 seconds.
As for Hughes, he edged teammate Eddie Elliott, 24.39 seconds to 24.64, in the 50 freestyle and then took the 100 freestyle in 53.59 seconds in a 1-2-3 sweep with the Hornets’ James Cao (56.74) and Carter Page (57.48).
Liverpool rebounded from this on Friday to defeat Syracuse City 96-78 as Cavallerano took the 200 IM in 2:12.11, won the 100 butterfly in 59.30 seconds and helped Alexander, Race and Panayil win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:41.31.
For his part, Alexander went 5:24 flat in the 500 freestyle to hold off Syracuse’s Robin Auerwater (5:28.56) and was second in the 50 freestyle (24.47) as Selig, in 1;08.95, edged teammate Alex Hoffman (1:09.08) to win the 100 backstroke.
Though his total dipped to 193.65 points, Gridley again prevailed in diving. Sean O’Neil, in 2:09.48, led a top-three sweep of the 200 freestyle with Tristan Vang (2:16.51) and John Morawski (2:17.02), with O’Neil, Alexander, Race and Cavallerano going 3:54.94 in the 400 freestyle relay.
