SYRACUSE – Only a few points, in a handful of events, kept the Fayetteville-Manlius indoor track and field teams from sweeping Thursday’s Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division championships at SRC Arena.
Instead, the boys Hornets, with 136 points, ended up just five points behind Baldwinsville at night’s end as the F-M girls got 148 points, but trailed Cicero-North Syracuse’s total of 166.
Again flourishing in distance races, F-M’s boys saw WIll Seamans win at 1,600 meters, going four minutes, 33.79 seconds after he finished second in the 1,000-meter run in 2:40.72. Anthony Otis was third (4:42.38) in the 1,600.
Nolan McGinn, who was fourth in the 1,000, ran 3,200 meters in 10:09.91, edging the 10:10.46 from teammate Ben Perry as McGinn, Seamans, Otis and Cooper Dereszynski were second in the 4×800 relay in 8:34.18 to West Genesee’s 8:32.11.
Trevor Krukin got second place in the 600-meter run in 1:31.24, ahead of Dereszynski (1:31.91) in third place, and cleared 5 feet 6 inches in the high jump to again finish second. Connor Ball got second in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.76 seconds to go with a sixth (19’8 1/4″) in the long jump.
In the shot put, Tyler Dixie threw it 42’10 1/2″ for second place as Liam Malgieri (38’6″) was fourth, but improved to third in the weight throw with 45’2″ as Mike Surowiec (37’1″) was sixth.
Seth Albert was fourth in the 55-meter dash in 6.85 seconds, with Guy Juran fifth in the triple jump by going 37’11”. In the 4×400 relay F-M got third place in 3:41.89, also taking third in the 4×200 in 1:36.98.
Moving to the girls side, F-M had a 1-2 finish in the 3,000-meter run as Izzie Sullivan prevailed in 10:14.87, just ahead of Amelia Amack’s 10:15.78. Going for another win in the 1,500, Sullivan ran 4:48.35, but was edged by C-NS’s Kate Putman (4:47.50), with Amack third in 4:52.29.
The 600 was a particular classic as Hannah Kaercher nearly caught the Northstars’ Hannah Boyle, her time of 2:55.25 just behind Boyle’s 2:55.13 as Maria Khalifeh (3:21.26) was fourth. But Kaercher did win the 600 in 1:38.67 as Isabaella Adrian finished sixth.
Maya McKenzie won the 55 sprint with her time of 7.54 seconds and was second in the 300-meter dash in 42.35 seconds, one-hundredth of a second behind C-NS’s Marissa Doty (42.34) as Elrose Hanlon took fifth place.
F-M won two other close battles. Natalee Barber, in the 55 hurdles, went 9.077 seconds to edge the 9.080 from Nottingham’s Miyanah Robinson, while in the shot put Bella Pierie was victorious thanks to a throw of 27’5 1/2″, half an inch ahead of West Genesee’s Alexcis Rydelek.
Wren Usiatynski continued to excel in the pole vault, her clearance of 11 feet well ahead of the 7’6″ put up by C-NS’s Kaleigh Bosimenu and Baldwinsville’s Kelsey Dwyer.
Yet another 1-2 Hornets effort came in the long jump, Elina Cabrera going 15’7″ to hold off Barber (15’6 3/4″) by one-quarter of an inch. Cabrera cleared 4’6″ for third place in the high jump.
Brigid Teaken took third in the triple jump with 31’3 3/4″” as Cabrera (29’6″) finished fifth. The Hornets were third in the 4×400 relay in 4:22 flat and also third in the 4×200 in 1:51.94.
A day earlier, in the Onondaga High School League meet, Christian Brothers Academy earned some wins in Division I as Bishop Grimes competed in Division II.
CBA’s Cooper Groat won the boys 600 in 1:27.10, edging Cazenovia’s Cassidy Gillmore (1:27.28) as Chris Zajdel was second in the 300 in 38.59 seconds. Joe McMahon took fourth in the 1,000 in 2:54.93.
On the girls side for CBA, Bella Cannizzo was second in the 3,000 in 11:56.91
Grimes, in Division II, had Sean Moran finish second in the boys 3,200 in 11:03.09 and fourth in the 1,600 in 5:10.38, while Aaron Nuzzo was fifth in the 300 in 43.70.
Edy Livingston took third in the girls 3,000 in 12:32.78 to go with a fourth in the 1,500. Isabelle Esquivel was fourth in the long jump, with Karolina Krolikowska fifth in the 1,000 and Grimes fifth in the 4×200.
