SYRACUSE – Maybe it only figured that Jacob Griffin and Caden Griffin would help the Cicero-North Syracuse boys swim team snare the first victory of the day during the Dec. 28 Griffin Sprint Invitational at Nottingham High School.
Swimming in the 200-yard medley relay, the two Griffins joined Northstars teammates Connor Burke and Anthony Gabrielli to post one minute, 49.92 seconds, just ahead of the 1:50.61 from runner-up Fayetteville-Manlius.
In the rarely-contested 50-yard backstroke, Jacob Griffin finished in 26.58 seconds, just beat out by the 26.47 from Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA’s Nathaniel Wales. He also took fifth in the 100 individual medley in 1:00.47.
Donovan Medina nearly won the 50-yard breaststroke, his 31.20 seconds trailing only the 30.64 from Fulton’s Tyler LaDue as he also took sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.08.
In the 100 butterfly, Caden Griffin finished third in 59.05 seconds, matching his third in the 50 freestyle in 25.81 seconds. Jacob Griffin also was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 22.82 seconds, with Caden Griffin (24.13) seventh. Burke got seventh in the 50 breaststroke.
Liverpool was also at the Griffin meet as Jack Cavallerano, Geoff Race, Ryan Gublo and Jared Keyes were fourth in the 200 medley relay in 1:55.82.
On his own, Cavallerano got fourth place in the 100 freestyle in 53.39 seconds, seventh in the 100 IM and fourth (25.86) in the 50 butterfly, where Nate Alexander was eighth and Race ninth, with Trevor Selig fifth in the 50 breaststroke in 32.46 seconds and seventh in the 50 backstroke.
C-NS was back at Nottingham to face Baldwinsville Thursday night, and even without top sprinter Mikey White in the lineup, the Bees toppled the Northstars 88-75.
Jacob Grifin still got victories in the 50 freestyle in 22.83 seconds and 100 freestyle in 51.90 seconds while helping Burke, Gabrielli and Caden Griffin take the 200 medley relay in 1:50.01.
For his part, Caden Griffin won the 100 butterfly in 59.86 seconds as Gabrielli beat the field in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.06.
Again the Northstars will be at Nottingham for the Salt City Athletic Championships next weekend after Tuesday’s meet at Mexico.
