CENTRAL NEW YORK – Even though it had not competed in 2 ½ weeks, the Marcellus wrestling team had not surrendered any of its form.
That was evident on Dec. 22, when the Mustangs resumed its season against Southern Hills and, with victories of every sort on the mat, prevailed by a score of 48-24.
Three consecutive pins in the middle weights highlighted the meet. At 132 pounds, Colin Scherer pinned Shawn Vanerden in the last second of the opening period.
It was followed, at 138 pounds, by Alex Lostracco’s second-period fall over Alex Wilcox, with Chris Doshna taking six fewer seconds at 145 pounds to pin Ben Seamans.
Two decisions bridged these results, with Gavin Ciota (126 pounds) shutting out Tanner Clemons 7-0 and Dan Okhman, at 152 pounds, handling Aiden Molton 7-1.
Ryder Donahue’s 92-second pin of 189-pound opponent John McKenna was the quickest of the night. Zach Grolling won at 172 pounds when Reed Brown suffered an injury default.
Donovan Fraher prevailed at 110 pounds by pinning Aiden Newkirk late in the first period, with Jonas Kaczor getting a forfeit at 215 pounds.
Competing again Tuesday in the Kenneth Haines Memorial Tournament at Fulton, Marcellus finished eighth out of 14 teams, but got a victory from Fraher at 110.
Fraher pinned Mexico’s Kyren Stock in 48 seconds in the semifinal before a title bout against Camden’s Kolton Kelley which only lasted 85 seconds before Fraher picked up the fall.
Okhman finished fourth at 152, with Scherer, at 126, and Lostracco, at 132, each earning fifth-place finishes, Lostracco doing so with a 92-second pin over Liverpool’s Tyler Vivacqua.
Back on Dec. 22, West Genesee faced Cicero-North Syracuse and lost, 54-20, to the Northstars.
They started at 172, with C-NS taking each of the four bouts in the higher weight classes before Austin Feisinger, at 102 pounds, got the Wildcats on the board with a 20-second pin of Javone Dawkins.
Two bouts later, at 118 pounds, Logan Willis beat Anthony Ciciarelli 7-3, with WG claiming two other bouts later in the meet, both of them pins.
Matt Murdock, at 145, was able to pin Sean Aldrich early in the third period before Sam Snyder wrestled at 152 and pinned Gavin Ciszewski in 96 seconds.
