CENTRAL NEW YORK – Off to its strongest start in decades, the Jordan-Elbridge wrestling team continued to make some strides while appearing in the Dec. 18 Brett Dixon Memorial Duals at Central Square.
Overall, the Eagles went 3-2, tying Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and Cortland for second place, all of them trailing the perfect 5-0 mark from the host Redhawks.
A 54-21 win over Cazenovia got it started as three straight pins came from Dylan Nolan (110 pounds), Kaylee Swalgin (118 pounds) and Nolan Jackson (126 pounds), with Jack Lamson (145 pounds) matching Swalgin and Jackson by getting a pin in less than a minute and another fall from Jon Everhart at 160 pounds.
A close match with VVS followed, and J-E took it 40-33 when Tyler Chilson, in the 102-pound finale, pinned Mark Hoffman in the second period. Nolan, Swalgin and Jackson all had pins again, as did Lamson, with Angelo Turo (172 pounds) taking just 48 seconds to pin Seth Roundy.
Central Square would step up to edge J-E 40-36, though Lamson got his third straight pin after Henry Smith (132 pounds) finished off Damon Hogan in 1:55. Everhart got a third-period pin over Dante Coppola.
Lamson and Turo had pins in a 60-18 win over Syracuse before a finale where J-E lost a narrow 37-36 battle to Cortland which included Lamson pinning Wyatt Tinker in the second period and Jackson, in the finale at 126, getting a 19-second fall over Devlin Riotto.
Wrestling again Wednesday night, J-E took on long-time power Phoenix and never trailed in the course of a 42-25 victory over the Firebirds.
They traded pins at the outset, Chris Martinez (152 pounds) getting a fall over Chris McAllister in the final seconds of the opening bout.
Then Turo pinned Jacob Neubert in 1:42 and Bryce Rigby (189 pounds) got a third-period pin over Jeff Horner to give the Eagles the lead for good as Raiden Yale, at 285 pounds, fought past Maurice Handy 5-2.
After a forfeit to Nolan, J-E began its closing surge at 126, where Jackson pinned Zadyn Tracy in the second period. Lamson, moved down to 132 pounds, beat Parker Allers 8-2 as, in the 145-pound finale, Jack Smith pinned Leon Smithin the third period.
