CENTRAL NEW YORK – Area high school wrestling teams crammed in some more matches in the weeks leading up to the holiday break.
Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA could only manage an 11th-place finish amid a tough field during the Dec. 17-18 North Country Invitational at Indian River.
Matthew Dougherty, who was fourth at 110 pounds, was the Rams’ lone top-four finisher, with Enver Bulatov sixth at 189 pounds and Ben Paul sixth at 215 pounds.
As for East Syracuse Minoa, it found itself going to the Montgomery County Duals on Dec. 18, where it was unable to win any of its five matches.
Falling 54-18 to Amsterdam, the Spartans had Ian Schroeder, at 215 pounds, pin Jackson Merritt in 30 seconds, with forfeits to Max Wunderlich (285 pounds) and Peyton Spencer (102 pounds).
A 66-12 defeat to Averill Park included Schroeder’s 65-second fall over Griffin Sleicher and Wunderlich’s 50-second pin over Connor Byers. After losses to Fonda-Fultonville-Johnstown and Ballston Spa, ESM lost 66-9 to Newburgh Free Academy with one mat win – from Schroeder, whose overtime takedown topped Aiden Harrison 6-4.
When it returned to the mat last Wednesday to face Fulton, ESM actually won the first two bouts on the card, but was overwhelmed from there in a 54-18 loss to the Red Raiders.
Caiden Scott, in the opening bout at 110, had a third-period fall over Brady Niver as Karlo Vergne, at 118 pounds, outlasted Kellen Roberts 16-10 to make it 9-0.
Then Fulton claimed the next five bouts, three of them forfeits, before Dylan Johnston, at 160 pounds, used a single escape to edge Ashton Gates 1-0. Schroeder’s first-period pin of Kaden Reynells was the only other Spartan win.
