ONONDAGA COUNTY – For the second time this fall, the Liverpool girls volleyball team offered a challenge to Baldwinsville, still the reigning dynasty in the area Class AA ranks.
And once more, the Bees got the best of the Warriors, only needing three sets.
Having lost the opening set 25-12, Liverpool put together a strong effort in the second set and nearly pulled even, only to have B’ville take that set 25-23 and then win the third 25-14.
Lola Sageer paced the Warriors with five kills. Allyson Crandall got six assists, with Addie Tanton adding four assists as Alyssa Zimmer had seven digs and Sophie Sageer had five digs.
To lead the Bees, Madelyn Diep put away 13 kills, helped up front by Gianna May (six kills), Jayda Pyle (five kills) and Erin Gregoire (four kills) as Madison MacKaig gained 31 assists.
Liverpool recovered from this on Thursday to sweep Nottingham 25-17, 25-10, 25-10. Lola Sageer stood out with 10 kills and six blocks, while Tanton had six assists and Crandall got five assists. Elliana Vangelov contributed three kills.
Meanwhile, Cicero-North Syracuse, eager to get going again after an epic five-set defeat to Liverpool on Sept. 29, did so with last Tuesday’s 25-9, 25-13, 25-10 sweep of Corcoran.
Lauren Capone recorded six of the Northstars’ 16 aces. Jenna Pickard had four kills, with Capone and Lauren Milewski each getting three kills as Marissa Baker had eight assists and Natalie Tice earned six assists.
Even more important was the Northstars’ effort against West Genesee a night later. After a 25-19 win in the opening set and a 25-23 loss in the second, C-NS outclassed the Wildcats 25-16 and 25-17 the next two sets to win in four, led by Tice, who had 38 assists, five kills, four aces and four digs.
Maddy Howell amassed 18 kills and 12 blocks, dominating the front line. Karley Eymer had nine kills and six digs, with Madison Roche and Carly Overend each getting six kills. Roche added 10 digs and Maddy Manz had 12 digs.
In Friday’s 25-17, 25-14, 25-16 victory over Oswego, C-NS had Baker anchor the back line with her 16 assists. Howell led with eight kills, while Capone got six assists as she, along with Grace Murray and Alita Carey-Santagelo, had four kills apiece. Manz picked up 10 digs.
