ONONDAGA COUNTY – Knowing quite well how tough it is to pull off an entire season without a loss or tie, the Cicero-North Syracuse field hockey still could not prevent one of its main rivals from inching closer to that same accomplishment.
The Northstars went to Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium last Monday night, seeking to get even with Baldwinsville, but instead got shut down in a 2-0 defeat to the Bees.
When they first met Sept. 14 at Bragman Stadium, C-NS had all kinds of chances throughout the game, but B’ville turned them back and rode two goals by Sydney Huhtala to a 2-1 victory.
Back home, the Bees did even better on the defensive side. That was owed to the work Grace Hollenbeck, Skye Exware, Emma Ciappa and Cadence Harvard did on defense, blocking shots and making sure Nadia Kozman only had to make two saves.
On the other end, C-NS did see goalie Avery Richardson make nine saves, but Bridget Roy twice put shots past her, running her season total to 12 goals as Huhtala got credit for an assist.
Roaring back to form two nights later, C-NS flattened Cortland 10-0, getting to double digits on the scoreboard as Chrissy Wagner scored three times for a hat trick and added an assist.
Gabby Wameling had a goal and two assists. Sophia Melfi, Allison Wick, Nicole Conklin and Alyssa Christensen each had one goal and one assist as Alexa Snyder and Shannon Brown also converted. Allison Cole contributed an assist.
As C-NS was falling to B’ville, Liverpool, coming off a 5-0 defeat to the Northstars two days earlier, could not recover against Fayetteville-Manlius, falling 1-0 to the Hornets.
These teams had played to a 0-0 draw at LHS Stadium three weeks earlier, and here the Warriors did all it could to again quiet F-M, McKenna Ecker recording seven saves, But the Hornets broke through on Sophia Lobo’s goal and held on the rest of the way.
Liverpool turned this around on Saturday and beat East Syracuse Minoa by that same 1-0 margin. Kaitlyn Guilfoil’s goal held up as the Warriors limited the Spartans to just two shots all afternoon.
