ONONDAGA COUNTY – Amid all the frantic activity of the final full week of the regular season, girls tennis teams from West Genesee and Marcellus were able to add to their win totals.
West Genesee handled Henninger 7-0 to start out its week, not dropping a set in any of the matches, then beat East Syracuse Minoa 6-1 a day later as Isabelle Wells and Helena Allen took turns in singles and won in straight sets to go with a doubles sweep of the Spartans.
Even more impressive was Thursday’s 7-0 romp over Cicero-North Syracuse where the Wildcats did not drop a set in any of the matches.
Angelina Llanos and Katie Viau paired in doubles to top Autumn Brown and Megan Johnston 6-2, 6-1, with Angelina Allen and Margaret Mello topping Golden Duru and Megan Mieves 6-1, 7-5.
The teams of Kayla Latone-Hannah Sparks and Ava Amodio-Kailyn Drury also won in two sets as, in singles, Isabelle Wells handled Eve Campitello 6-1, 6-1, with Calina Olson beating Holly Costello 6-4, 6-2 and Helena Allen getting a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ava Schiff.
WG then lost a 4-3 decision to Auburn on Friday, with Viau and Llanos both rolling in singles, as did Amodio and Helena Allen in doubles. But the pivotal point was earned by the Maroons when Latone and Olson fell to Claire Diffin and Abigail Carr 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
On Saturday, the Wildcats beat Central Square 6-1, claiming points in all four doubles matches to go with Viau’s 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Claire Hayes and Nicole Vasilev beating Danni Moran 6-1, 6-2.
Before it lost to unbeaten Skaneateles, Marcellus rolled in last Monday’s match against Pulaski, not dropping more than three games in any single set of a 7-0 shutout of the Blue Devils. Sydney Colon and Kara Wangsness had the closest match, which was still a 6-3, 6-1 romp over Julianna Hefti and Jessica Yesensky.
A 4-3 win over Manlius-Pebble Hill followed where the Mustangs were swept in singles, but won all the doubles points. The pivotal point came when Sophie Clark and Shaelyn Kelly rallied past Eden Hildebrandt and Dahlia Nemes 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 as the teams of Colon-Wangsness, Korrine Kemp-Maddie Vetsch and Ella Lutwin-Grace Rynikewicz also prevailed
Jordan-Elbridge put together a 6-0 shutout of Phoenix led by singles wins from Anisa Bort, Lizzie Conrad and Mary McGinn. The Eagles’ doubles teams of Mia Disinger-Jillian Ferris and Leah Dixon-Madelyn Mott also won in two sets.
Then The Eagles fell 7-0 to CBA a day later, but beat Bishop Grimes 5-1 as Bort, Conrad and McGinn did not lose a game in any of their singles matches. In Thursday’s 6-1 loss to Mexico, Bort prevented the sweep, beating the Tigers’ Isabella Ponzi 6-1, 6-0.
During Friday’s 4-2 defeat to Manlius-Pebble Hill, Bort won 6-2, 6-1 over Caroline Mezzalingua, while Amy Lin claimed a forfeit. Emily Chiaramonte and Leah Dixon lost a 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 12-10 doubles epic to Sophia Menacho and Dahlia Nemes.
Westhill dropped a 4-3 decision to Chittenango last Monday. In single-set matches to 10 games, the doubles teams of Hannah Johnston-Kathleen Rogers and Rachel Colucci-Isabella Johnson prevailed, as did Olivia Antoine in singles.
A 6-1 defeat to Cazenovia followed a day later, where Johnson, paired this time with Marisa Rosati, won a single-set 10-2 decision over Madden Cobb and Kiana Vazquez, but the Warriors were otherwise shut out.
Still busy on Wednesday, Westhill turned around the 6-1 score and topped Phoenix, with straight set doubles wins from Johnston-Rogers, Colucci-Marisa Rosati, Mia Doss-Bridget Thornton and Delaney Carroll-Jillian Eckert.
In Friday’s 4-3 defeat to Camden, the Warriors saw Doss win in singles, with doubles points going to Colucci-Rogers and Johson-Rosati, but the Blue Devils won the rest of the matches in straight sets.
